front ends
The Subie boys are busy trying to dismantle the front end on the latest project they're doing. However they have run into a brick wall, they can't remove the old cv joint off the front suspension. Is tere anyone who knows any little tricks to get it off. Would be greatfully appreciated.

CV
We cant work out how to get the CV joint off the drive shaft. I know there is a retaining clip , but dont know how to get to it . Got the DOJ's off . no problem there. But not able to get the CV off the shaft.

Sounds like the ring clip has gone AWL! Happened to me once on Holden Apollo which the ringclip got bent half half was inside the shaft and other half was in the slot - hard work to get it off and I remembered that I used 2 jemmy bars wedging it out and yes it was hard but be aware - put plywood behind the bar so that you wont damage the bolts on the gearbox.

Yes i am talking about the outer front cv joint. I have looked at a dismantled view. the retaining clip is in behind the ball bearings ( best way to describe them ) The idea is to put new joints on. Or is it easier to replace the cv joint and shaft and put the inner on.

nah they shuld just knock off.
i have come across a fair few at work which are basically seized on. but there hasnt been one i havent been able to smack off.
might have to use the flat edge of a nice big block splitter
but alas if it just wont come off then yer. wuld end up being easierto replace cv and shaft then reassemble the inner. or get a whole new shaft.

the outer cup is a press fit. Almost impossible to get off without BIG amounts of force. And its a prick to get the shaft back into the joint.
your better off finding a good outer joint and shaft and just using that. Much easier.

Thanks everyone for your input. The boys have been shopping around today & have decided to just replace the whole thing from gearbox out. It isn't too dear & will save some broken fingers & fraid tempers I think.
Thanks again to all your suggestions everyone.
