Mission for Tweety.. water injection ??

Post by steptoe » Mon Dec 31, 2012 6:29 pm

Hey Tony, or anyone else out there running water injection and boost.

With my little inverter required coffee machine pump (project DEC20,09 :( ) sitting idle in a box, the original magazine article by Julian Edgar on water misting rediscovered ...

wondering if you have done or time to try some runs up hills to compare op temps with water injection on and then off, or in reverse order if you wish :)

I have been monitoring temps in the heat finding I can run cruise at about 77, climb a 3km stretch gaining about 230m in altitude and no matter whether I use 3rd fourth or fifth in the climb, still end up my temp unit screaming at me coz it hit 90C or up to 92C. Third fan made very little difference.

The run down can see 70C.
Curious to know if you get a better , as in cooler op temp climbing hills

ta,

I am curious about water injection if we are talking about the same thing.
Back in the 80's I bought a Varijection (think that is what it is called) system from Edlebrock (Spelling) and it contained a bottle with a pump on it, an electronic control system to run the system off engine vaccum (stretching the brain matter now) a set up to spray water into the top of the carby and an added extra (bought later) a metering system for displaying via a row of LED's how hard the pump was going.
I still have it all in its box and I used to run metho and water in the system.
I had it fitted to an 83 Ford Telsta (only Ford I have ever owned and it was really a Mazda anyway)
I didnt notice any differences back then but we were running Super petrol and not unleaded so I dont know if there is any value in it now.
Is this the sort of system you are talking about ?
If so I will be following your exploits with interest.

Jon, are you talking coolant temp or intake temp?

If your coolant temperatures are climbing that much, Id be looking at your cooling system. The best thing I ever did for the cooling of my EA82T was refitting the engine driven fan.
It moves about 4 times as much air as any electric fan can. How old is your radiator?

ahhh, answering sdrawkcab , talking engine coolant and block temps Gannon.
Radiator was newly service when I got it six point five years ago, or 90,000km ago.
Still...90C is only halfway on the L Series water temp gauge , saw it go hotter one winter day completely blocked with cardboard, ran close to hot mark and hit 109C on my watchdog done in order to make the miracle black block seal the turbo internal leak I suspect it was. That was hot !!

You should hear the added third fan it pulls some air at all engine speeds .

This is my only sube to have an engine driven fan, all others great.

I did have twin electric on an old Ford that got hotter until I went back to the fixed fan, but that was my fault in using one thermo set too high. Have recently seen an ign coil like ballast resistor to give two speeds for electric fan , nice idea :)

Cliff, you need to search Tweety and Tonys water injection thread. The autospeed dot com aussie website also has a two part write up on it. It is a newer version of authors set up in the Zoom magazine of 12 to 14 years ago
