EA81 supercharger revamp by Tweety
If you are considering the electric pump, PM me and I will explain how to set it up without the expensive controller. The DC controller is good in some ways and bad in others. Mines still sitting on the floor next to me, with all the eBay bits, just got to do it. Making a dual core ally radiator first.
L serious, still.

so, anyone wanna get rid of their alternator belt as well as the water pump?
see http://www.greencarcongress.com/2005/09 ... aust_.html
On tweety I could have a twin turbo one for each exhaust powering the electrical system. A twin turbo supercharged ea81. dreaming now.

For those readers under 40 years old....Steptoe aka Jonno is refering to a small device with a knurled wheel on top and mounted on the front bicycle forks with an on/off elver that connected the wheel to the tyre to power 3 candlewatts of power to the frotn and rear nights lights. bloody useless thing but them were the days.
ok seems 2 hours of google and there isnt an alternative to running an alternator. So am considering moving it. This will elininate the heavy alternator mounts (that also currently mount the supercharger) it will also assist in the newly painted engine to look great with its yellow paint and chromed valve covers. more exposed.
Question: can an alternator run backwards and still charge normally?
Idea is to mount it near the crank pulley facing the other way- poking out the back.
Or a shaft with bearings each end and mount the alternator behind the engine.
Dynamo on the front wheel jonno?

Get the wife to pedal power.
this is interesting, a custom alt mount ...can mount the alt backwards. http://www.powermasterperformance.co/it ... 96/360/c68

Alternators produce alternating current that is the rectified by 6 diodes so direction of rotation doesnt matter, what will matter though is the internal fan for keeping the wires cool works much better in its desired direction of rotation.

Hey Gannon, how about an intercooler for the Alt? lol
Didnt know Alt's had an internal fan, only the external one. And I beleive the fan fins work on it to extract hot air rather than blow cooling air into it. Still I take your point. Have to go out to Tweety and look at what room I have anyway. be nice to move the Alt from where it is.
Jonno....I get it. lol

Today I thought long and hard on relocating the Alternator. I didtn come to a decision.
This pic is a mock up of the SPFI system with dizzy in place and the cone filter playing the new place for the alternator. The new mouts arent a problem its that there are very few if any real benefits. The concept was born so the actual engine with its newly painted colour would be seen better. Looks like it wont happen.
As for electronic water pump that will be considered after the new engine is fitted.
Today I spent time on the SPFI snorkel with fabricated brackets for when the time comes. still excited lol

When I said internal fan I was thinking if the later alternators. MY and l series have an external fan.
I'm assuming the electrical load on the trike is much less than a car, could you use a smaller alternator, like one off a small tractor.

ok Gannon, have the following link to a Kubota alt 55 amp. Can click on it for actual size. This alternator would fit in that spot where I'm holding the filter above but would fit facing the conventional way between the water pump and the manifold with a short fan belt.
The only thing that bothers me is the alternator mounting holes on the alternator itself. Conventionally they normally have two base lugs with a bolt through both to stabilise it fully. This one has one lug only and the other lug for an adjusting bracket. Would this one base lug be sufficient to mount the unit? I assume so as it is smaller.

This guy's running a 60amp kubota unit with the same arms as the unit you're looking at:Tweety wrote:The only thing that bothers me is the alternator mounting holes on the alternator itself. Here's the link to this guy's epic mini build, it's the top post but there's a few pics in it. He got his from the US for $100 apparently.
Cheers

I was also thinking - it's odd for an alternator to have only one wire... They usually have at least three!Tweety wrote:yeh cant see a problem there and nice and cheap. will have t look at the plug system. These Alts usually have only one wire. Think mine has 2. Also 55 amp is enough for tweety me thinks.

The alt in the ebay link has 3 wires. 1 fat one for B+ and then a T shaped 2 pin plug for ignition and charge light
