you guys are taking alot of spares.i was thinking we could each cary asorted spares .the ones that have been put up but not in each car share the load sort of thing.im also thinking starter, alternator,dizzy. but i supose theres a lot ofod things in most of our cars

well its great to see you chose a date and month ,its pretty hot up there in september we always used to go in june thats because we escaped some of our winter plus it was just nice up top end that that time of year ,but im keen for any month so that dont matter, the road should be tar for heaps of the way last time i went we came back cairns way as we always went west to get up there mainly due to being ableto camp on side of road out west its much better you can light a fire and camp for free out west, then im not into caravan parks either dont get me wrong i dont mind stayin in one every third night or so for a warm shower etc but im all for them places where they put up toilets on side of highways i believe you are aloud to camp at them for twenty four hours, most servos as you are getting further north have showers in them and will let you havea shower for 2 bucks , we used to make sure we always had a towel and soap handy simply because while people are fueling up and getting a feed it was quick to just duck in and have a wash .plus the old shower bag is handy.
this all depends on others and how they feel about the non caravan park stuff ,im cool with whatever people like to do, ive pretty much roughed it on trips so im easy goin, the road up north is fantastic now pretty much tar all to cairns and then youve got that road to cooktown after you go over the ferry at daintree heading for cape trib even that road is pretty good all bar one part which is pretty steep and when wet you can slide backwards.
then after cook town gees the road was all done up coming from north into cooktown last time i went and that was over five years ago now.
even the road into weipa was much better last time but then im told it all depends when they last graded it.
one realy good idea is to push for as many miles as you can each day this enables you to get where you want to reach as in we all want to make it to the top so the idea is to push for the miles each day to reach destination and then take it easy on way back this way people can take there time to visit destinations they want to visit, it also means when reaching places like cairns etc that once we are in safe area where we dont need to be with each other for help and support and plus some people have already been to some tourist places and some havent that they can break up and go where they please.
i know this is a huge post sorry guys ,but just some ideas the mr dibs has never been before so im pretty keen for him to see all this .

I was thinking about camping in 'Free' camping spots along the way after Cairns. From Brisbane to Cairns I was thinking of staying in caravan parks - just because we can have hot showers & have 240v to recharge things etc.

What brand & size of tyre are people running???
I need to buy 6 new tyres for this trip..... in 27x8.5 R14LT.

im running 30x9.5x15 in some form of mud tyre

tho i may go 5 stud before then to get some decent brakes

I was thinking of the Kumho KL71 or the Kumho 834.

Any other suggestions for tyres?
I want something with a mud terrain & good strong side wall.

Maxxis Buckshot Mudder in 27x8.50x14 or 29" and 30" on 15" rims.

most of us did 8500km on the finke trip and did service the cars untill we got back, most of is was pretty easy hiway work but there still was some hard still, cars were fine.

Right you are bryan,but i had to clean the air filter twice.So i guess a couple of spare air filters wouldn't go a stray.

Great sounding trip guys, I never seriously considered this until I read this months NRMA magazine that members get, in this edition a husband and wife team took their all wheel drive volvo up to cape york. This got me thinking that if they can do it in a stock volvo awd, then a modified sube should eat it. Would be tempted to do this trip, but a long trip from Hobart, still I did buy my scuby in Darwin.!

Yeah I was going to carry a new air filter for that car, I will be running a snorkel to try to reduce dust ingestion.

I'm at Seisia, just spent three days camping here with two couples who did the Gunshot entry track in their cruisers. I saw their footage. The two big drops are around 12 - 17 mtres long, have ruts/holes and drops at 40degs. A well raised suby could do it. Coming back the other way would be another story. The rest of the track, a suby can handle. And a suby can handle the telegraph track. But make sure you're in good company for the creek and river crossings. They get pretty deep
And if you guys do the 2010 trip, make sure you do the Summerset beach loop run, just down from the Cape tip. Five beaches, loads of fun. I just did it in my ol' girl. I'll post the vids when I get the op.

I only really got a filthy filter from the on dark approach to Wollogatraz but still was impressed with the dirt stopping of it. Once i got back i found the BOV outlet was sheared so i was sucking in dirt for the last few thousand without knowing it.
