Upgrade Shocks

Post by suba88 » Tue Oct 02, 2007 8:39 pm

My shockies on the L series have never been changed so i was just seeing what is available and what is standard price for parts and fitting. I have king springs installed already. Does upgrading shocks make any difference to clearance or the lift of the car?
Everyone seems to get KYB shockies, how much are these and where are they best purchased from around Perth? I rang Pedders and they said they could only fit Comfort Gas shocks all round and the price ended up over $1000.

any info and suggestions would be great cheers
Paul

Hey Paul.

You could purchase and self install for half that price. I recently purchased kyb 2wd struts for the rear (more lift that 4x4 ones) for about $85 each from auto one. Not sure on the cost of the fronts but shouldn't be to much. a set of spring clamps an a day's work and it is done.

did you just install the rears for any particular reason, or u gunna do the front ones soon? $85 seems to be a good price and you reckon get the 2wd shocks for more height, are they stiffer then the 4wd ones? can u notice the difference in the rear with your car?

I just swapped the rears cause the 4x4 ones caused some sagging and tyre rubbing on compression. Haven't noticed any difference. Yeh would recommend the 2wd ones over the 4wd ones.

Good place to get KYB's from is WA Suspensions in Osborne Park. They are the WA disty for them.
Have a go at self installing if your keen, its fairly straight forward.

Im also looking at replacing 1992 L series springs. Does anyone know how far you can increase the length of the springs without doing other modifications? If so suggestions on supplier would be welcomed.

The Kings website has the local distributers listed I beleive.

Contacted Lovells, the return email says that have nothing available for the L series subaru.

My question now is-- if you have replaced coil springs and gained more height which make and model did you use?

In Tech Talk section - Lifting a Subaru of this website
King Springs (probably because one brand is actually named King), they are about 33% heavier duty than standard and provide both more tension and vehicle height

Every one i have spoken to so far are able to locate replacement springs that are listed as standard height. Some are also listed as heavy duty.
Do the heavy duty standard height springs also raise clearance?
Cheers Mark

Yeah they do raise height but mostly because they are brand new (your old ones will be sagging) and also because under compression they will compress less becuase they are heavy duty.

I have seen L series subarus with Lovells springs before, whoever dealt with your enquiry probably got confused with MY series Subarus. Either that or perhaps they no longer manufacture that model. Doesn't matter anyway, general opinion is Kings are better.

Note - they have quoted you on SEDAN springs for the rear.
The part number for Wagon ones is KSRS-03.
If you have Munroe rear shockies you will need to order the Kings springs designed to suit them. KSRS03M. I think the spring base is slightly different on them.

**edit - somebody should probably move this thread to the suspensions section.
