Warren river camping trip

Thought I would give a little read on the trip that RSR555 and myself did down to Warren River over the long weekend , pitty no-one else could make it , even those that I tried to Bribe with money

.
Two vehicals made the trip , Paul with his 100 series with rooftop camper and towing a trailer and his wife and their six kids and Deb and myself and our two boys towing our camper trailer.
we left at around 10.30 Saturday morning with the storm well and truley at it's worst , the lightening and the rain was incredible , the storm traveled with us to about 20 k's from Bunbury where the weather became quite nice with no rain about anymore.
we arrived in Pemberton at about 3pm where we fueled up and all the kids had a bit of a stretch before we headed further south to the forrest.
I had a few days before ,worked out on the sat nav where we were going to go after we left Pemberton and I set it to open up the rout that we would now take throught the tracks to the mouth of the Warren river on the south coast , it turned out that the co-ordinances on the sat nav for the area was up the shit and it got us a little lost .
The funny part about going down the wrong tracks was that 3 other vehicals , 2 Patrols and an 80 series thought that we new where we were going and followed us even after we back-tracked the first time , after we came to a dead-end the second time and had to manover the trailers around to head back in the other direction , they decide that maybe they would not follow us any more.
we then proceded down another track that became more and more obvious that it hadnt been used by any vehicals for many many a year as the trees had completely over grown the track...............................................................

After following this um track lol for some time , down some rather steep and very slipery muddy sections we came out of the over growth back onto a gravel track that had a sign saying Warren river , WOO HOO !!!
We followed this track ( now in the darkness) for about another halve an hour which became basicly a sand track but heading in the right direction so all was good. At one point along this track we had come to a bit of a steep rutted sandy hill and the Subi could quite make it to the top as she bogged down in the soft sand , we backed down the hill and let some more air out of the tyres to have another go , the heavey camper trailer on the back wasnt making it easy I guess , just as we were about to have another go after letting the tyres down who should roll up behind paul , but the 3 vehicals that had been following us earlier

, I mentioned to Paul that perhaps we could let them passed so as not to ho;d them up .
Paul then told me that one of the vehicals that we had passed earlier had said to him that there was a good camping spot not much after the hill that we were now at and that it wasnt all that big an area , so needless to say we didnt let them passed (first in best dressed

).
Second attempted and now running more boost the subi made it up with little effort ,Pauls 100 Series made light work of the hill I should say .

We arrived at the camp site some 300 meters after the hill which was on both sides of the track with the better side being on the left , which is of course the side we took claim to

On the Sunday morning Paul and I rather than put his camper back together on his Cruiser jumped in the Subi to see how far the beach was from where we were camped , we traveled down the track for about another 2 klm till we hit the sand dunes , we headed onto the first dune that was a steep downhill run of about 3 to 4 hundred meters , the sand was really loose and soft and I decided that as we were only in the one vehical that I would dedecend down the dune in case I got stuck and proceded to try and turn around needless to say I got stuck any way after about 15 mins and lots of pushing by Paul and the three boys WE EXTRACTED OURSELF FROM THE DUNE AND HEADED BACK TO CAMP.

On the way back to camp we passed the othere three vehicals that were camped opposite us on their way to the dunes from where we had just come .After lunch I went across to the other campers that had come back from their trip down to the beach to ask them what the conditions were after the dune we had turned around on and what the beach was like .
The info that they gave me was that the sand on the beach was fine and that the track oround some of the dunes was a little bumpy and that they recon that the subi would be fine which i thought was strange that these guys with their lifted patrols and big offroad tyres would say something like that , I think theu may have been saying that thinking in their minds that htey could rescue me when I got stuck .
So now deciding that we would load up and go and do some fishing we put all the rods and tackle boxes in the back of Pauls 100 and headed off in the 2 vehicals. We made it down the big dune with no probs of course and up one steep but not too tall dune and then allong some dune tracks till we reached the dune that went up and then down onto the beach , we dicided to walk up thios dune to check what it was like and plan an attack on it , over the other side the beach was really cut up and very soft but we thought we have come this far we may as well keep going , Paul went first but needed a second run with more speed to get over , Second run and no probs .
I had another look at this sand dune before planning my best attack in the Subi as I really am lacking ground clearance and running the RS front bar it acts very much like a plow with the deeply rutted track up, first attempted got about 20 meters from the top , no go .
On the second attempted got more of a run and wound the boost right up to 16 pounds and belted up and over the top with rooster tails spraying out the back and then down onto the beach.

I was setting up my reel onto my rod when I noticed that Paul was putting on his waders , I thought thats a great idea why havnt I got any of them.
paul then gets his gear all ready and then ,,,,,,,,,, woops !!!! the bait has been left behind at the camp @^%$ (*^%$ *^%$ $%^ )_)*&& *#$@
well we aint going back to camp to get the bait I said and decided to try a lure , cast out and bang 15 seconds later had a nice size herring on the beach , we fished for a while using the lures in what really was quite big waves comming onto the beach and you guessed it one of the big waves dumped itself onto paul and filled his waders up and dumped him down into the waves you could only imagine how hard it was for him to get himself up out of the water with about I would guess 40 litres of water in the waders.

Sounds like an awesome trip... I think i need to learn how to reverse my camper with all the reversing that took place. I would have been a serious pain when it came to them parts of the trip. I general unhook my camper and push it about.

good read tho. so was it a good spot? obviously some challenging 4x4 there. sounds like you had a ball.

My Canyonero was loving it but it's like driving a limo, not as much fun as the Subi

The trip home got of to a bad start before we had even left camp, I was just reversing thew Sbi to hitch up the camper and as I moved off from where I was parked Paul noticed a small puddle of oil on the groung where I had been parked , flipped the bonnet and discovered that one of the transmission hoses had split at the radiator , no major , we just shortened the hose a bit and reconnected it , I should point out that I had actually had the trans serviced on friday and requested that they fit a cooler and of course had they done that the lines would have been replaced, they however said they couldnt fit one as there wasnt enough room.
any way , we headed back into Pemberton and had lunch at the Glouster tree which some of the kids climbed about 10meters of the 61 mtr height .We then had a good run all the way till about 30 ks the Perth side of Bunbury when Paul called me on the radio saying that there was smoke pooring out from the back of the car , thought that there may have been a siezed bearing or something , we pulled over and then noticed that the smoke was actually comming from under the bonnet, you guessed it , the hose from the tranny had split again , it was now about 6.30 and the hose had sprayed out oil all over the place and even dont the side of the car and camper.

As you are aware we had allready shortened the hose and there was no way it could now be shortened again so Paul headed of up the road to try and find a roadhouse that had some hose and some transmision oil.
Paul returned about 30 to 40 mins later with 3 ltrs of oil and all sorts of things that he had found (i wont say where and what } ) we then started to cut and make a funnel and feed hose to fill the tranny and cut up some of the hose to replace the burst line , Paul is quite the scrounger

All fixed and on the road again we got to Byford , slowed down to the 60ks at the beginning of town but my speed crept up to 70 going through and got pinged by a camera , BUGGER .
All in all it was a great weekend with great company , the camping spot is awsome all though a bit closer to the beach would have been good .
