**extension of the conversaiton in the "inspiration" thread**

I'm definitely going ahead with the idea now - cutting my old L series Touring Wagon in half, welding an A-frame to the back half and registering it legally as a trailer.
Got a professional opinion tonight and it's officially "not a completely stupid idea".
Better still, we should be able to bang it out in just a few days!

I've borrowed a larger angle grinder than my little 4" one and I'm going to start cutting on Sunday.

Also "not a completely stupid idea" is what my welder friend said - trust me, I have asked his opinion on MANY extremely stupid ideas of mine hehe.

I've seen this done with an Escort van - worked pretty damn well. An electrician used it as work trailer for years.

Couple of weeks after that we'll start welding.

I can't wait to see this... Should be sweet... I want one.

I might run the idea by Jay... since we still have an MY touring wreck at his parents house. We should be able to make oue out of the back end also.

I love the idea, for a long time I've wanted to do a similar thing with a brumby and a removable canopy, the catch is I don't know if I could bring myself to hack up a brumby.

My step dad suggested the same thing with a brumby... i nearly knocked him out.

I think the idea is to make it sort of an outdoor camping trailor... like with a roof and stuff.... rather than having it for halling sand and shit.

you could even keep the fuel tank in there for long runs & pump it to your car via a hose .

and why not connect a car alternater to the diff so you can charge a car battery while on the road 8O

but us non wa guys want pics anyway.

I might keep the fuel tank in there, not sure of the legality of that just yet. If there is a problem then I will possibly substitute a 50L drinking water vessel under there (I will be careful to re-label the fuel filler!).
Unfortunately I can't keep the diff or driveshafts in there, that is a definite trailer legality problem aparently.

Tomorrow the sparks will fly!

you could still rig up something to drave an alternator off the stub axle once the cv is removed if you really wanted to, not sure if thats legal either though.

Would be good for charging a spare battery to run a camping fridge or something like that.

or you could have a 10hp mower engine with a reduction box
built in for when you get bogged and it could push itself out?

I love some of these ideas.

Jay and i were also talking about how cool it would be to bolt a mini BBQ to the inside of one of the rear doors... You open the door and your barbi is set up ready to go.

I picked up a 4x4 magazine today, it had an advert for those nifty storage drawers (the ones that are so strong they have a bloke sitting in one).
They have some accessory drawers....one contains a full dishwashing sink with working tap, and a 4burner gas stove - all in a slide-out drawer.

I do like the door idea.....we are looking into it but at the moment it seems we are going to be forced to weld one door shut but the other should be okay.
