Trip Report , Black Point

The camping trip to Black point and Lake Jasper went extremely well and thoroughly enjoyed by all that went.
We had arranged as you know to meet at Byford just south of Perth at 9am and planed to leave there at 9.30
All that said that they would be going i.e., Myself, Debbie and Mitchell and Cameron, Dave and Carla and Karen,
Devil Dave and Alex were all there before the scheduled time to leave which was great.
We left at 9.24 and headed south, We traveled through Pinjara, Waroona, Harvey and Brunswick Junction before
By-passing Bunbury on our way to Dunsborough where we had a bite to eat for a late lunch.
While we were there we had a look at the hot rod display, some awesome beasts there but none that could compete
with the Subi's off road
. Leaving Dunsborough we headed back towards Busselton to get onto the Bussel Hwy to
Continue south.
The next main town we arrived at was Margaret River { home of some would say the best wines in the world}
We stopped in town to refuel for the last time before heading bush. From Margaret River we headed down to karridale
, Grabbed some bait and then headed east along the Brockman hwy. We then only had to travel some 20 more Ks
Before hitting the gravel where Devil Dave in his ej20g powered Liberty showed those that could see through the dust,
His great drifting mode of travel. The land is very dry down there at the moment and there wasn't much green about at all,
The track was in pretty good nick and not too dusty as they would have had some rain over the last couple of days
Keeping the sandy track together. The track as described is sand although it is rather Grey to black so it gets you rather dirty
Not like the nice sand of the beach. The track although quite boggy at time didn't prove to be any match for the all conquering
Subi's, the worst bit was the cross-junction to head to Black point or straight to jasper, we took a right and headed to Black Point.
The track that I led us all down was a little steep and headed to a point just south of Black point which had the most awesome view
of the ocean and the basalt rock formations, we parked the Subi's up and went for a bit of a walk and took some snaps of
the ocean below and spotted some sea-lions ducking and diving in the surf, one was doing what appeared to be headstands in
the water with his tail flapping in the air.
We then headed back to the main viewpoint at the top of the hill overlooking the bay .The track that we had come down
On the way, now appeared a bit steeper and rather that go full stick I decided to take it a little easy so as not to bury the front of the
Subi into the deeply rutted track, this was a bit of a mistake as was not lowering the tyre pressure lower than the 25 psi that I had in the tyres.
I managed to back out ok but needed more run-up to get going again, we let another 8 psi out of the tyres and then with a
bit of pushing from the guys and girls I got back up the hill. After finding a safe place to stop I ran back to try and get some video of the
others racing up the track, by the time I got there Devil came roaring over the top and past me, but not before leaving me
with a horrible smell of burnt clutch in my nose, Karen was next to race up the hill with the ea82 non lifted wagon, she floated up ,
Or was that the engine that was valve floating, either way she did it without much fuss as did Alex and then Subarino.
At the top of Black point we parked the Subi's and then walked down the wooden stairs down to the basalt rock formations
to have a look at the ocean, deciding that it was a bit rough to do any fishiing at this stage and we still had to find a camping spot and set
up for the night.
Heading back down to the bottom of the hill we had to make a sharp left turn in the sand track to get to one of the camping spots,
I went around the corner with a little squirt of the throtle followed by Devil who decide to give it full noise and promptly burried all four wheels,
Someone else that still had a little too much air in their tyres, still a quick push and he was out so all was good and another thing for me to
write about for you all to read.
The camp site there is a really well sheltered spot under the peppermint trees with a nice wooden table,a couple of fireplaces and a toilet
50 meters away.Everyone set up their tents and then proced to cook dinner, Devil and alex must have bought halve the meat from a butchers
as they had enough to feed a small nation , they did however eat all they cooked wich was quite a feat.After dinner I produced my bottle
of Bundaburg royal liqueur and offered a small sample to some ( very small ) I like it too much to give too much away
Next morning we all rose a bit before 7am and got our rods set up and headed up over the hill and down to the rocks for some fishing, There wasn't
a lot a lot of fish that wanted to be part of it and all i caught was a few small sand whiting , i kept 3 and made a grilled fish sandwhich when we got back
to camp. After packing up camp we headed back to the black Point Lake jasper cross-roads and turned right towards jasper beach, the track down
to the beack was pretty easy and once through the last section that ,was a little soft , we hit a very firm beach. Jasper Beach is so much bigger than
i thought and the ocean was really great for swimming , fishing the gutters or heading out a bit to the waves that were rolling in.
we didn't spend much time there as we had to get to Lake jasper for a look and then get back to Perth as most had either work or uni on the monday.
Lake Jasper is a truly wonderfull spot the lake is massive and is as you walk out to the deeper water it is cold enough to chill your beers,
It also tastes a little woody , the water that is, not the beer.
Leaving Jasper we had a bit of a sandy hill to go up and Karen hit it in a slightly wrong gear and Yellow Subi sunk in to much to continue ,
A quick push and we were all on the way again.
the rest of the track was quite picturesqe allthough uneventfull ,the last stop before hitting the bitumen was the one-tree bridge which is
quite high above the Donnelly river and made a great place to stop each Subi and take a photo from below the bridge .
From there we headed up the Vasse Hwy to Nannup where we all were stopped and breath tested , the Police thought that Alex must have been having
car trouble as he was pretty black from the dirt he must have been rolling around in :0, from there it was a straight forward run to Busselton for a late
lunch and then on back to Perth ending what was a great weekend trip .
The distance traveled over the 2 days was 770 klm.
