good newbie 4x4 spots
good newbie 4x4 spots
as my car is a stocko ie. no lift stock engine and carb with factory wheels i was wonderin about some spots to take it that it could actually go through.
i have taken it to the Gnangara pines area but once it got banked and the other almost got bogged ( but put some wood under for some traction) and was luckily able to get bak out
im looking for any spots around perth that i coudl go with someone as a passenger and still get home alright
any ideas???

Not to sure on the Sth side… I live on the Nth and know a few spots (as do other board members). There are heaps of dirt tracks around Dwellingup and Jarrahdale some of the stuff will require lift however there things you could do and there is heaps of open rally type roads there as well + its my understanding that there is plenty of access beach stuff down that way as well.

Toyota 105 Series LandCruiser (that nobody on here wants to really hear about).
RX Touring Wagon - fitted out for 4WDing (currently collecting dust).
RX Project - will be road only at this stage (and currently taking way to long to finish).

by this he means 90 acres mudpit (kwinana) some good sandy tracks around there too. ive been to jarrahdale stocko and got thru it with only minor bruises on the underside of the car. most places for 4x4 tho id suggest u take another 4by for recovery purposes. plus its alot more fun.BlackMale wrote:

not sure if i wanna venture to close to the 90 acres yet..dont wanna kill my parents lawn lol
dont really have much faith in my subi yet around the Gnangara pines coz of havin to be pulled out once lol so it makes me think that i cant go far yet which may ormay not be true
but i did manage to get round my block where my dad got his outback bogged (i no ti is only AWD not 4wd)
and obviously it would make it slightly easier to even have like a half inch of lift im guessing. so i might get round to tweaking with my suspension

you need 14's and slightly wider, higher profile tyres...that will give you a decent amount of lift, and also a fair bit more traction/floatation..have you been using low-range? it makes a massive difference..
alot of it is experience as well(not to sound like a d1ckhead cos im still learning) but the first few times i took my subi out, i got stuck in afew embarrassing situations, but now with abit of basic knowledge i can get my subi almost anywhere..(even before the lift and big motor)
there are some great spots down south such as whitehills near mandurah, and further south, 3 bears near dunsborough, get a map of that area, theres heaps of stuff down there, nothing too challenging. Afew hill climbs, limestone tracks etc etc..

and as for the tyres i have a set of four studs of 195/65 14s which have some nice tread on for offroad but they wont fit my subi only my lancer (subi has 140mm gap diagonally between studs and lancer only has 100mm which is wt the rims fit).
i have been thinking bout it and i should get some soon enough but id need help as i dont no anything about guard trimming or the likes
must admit also i havent ben using low range as much as i culd

Locations for offroading really depends on the level of offroading you want... Jarrahdale has a good mix of both... but if you don't know where you are going you could stumble into something you may not want to go up or down.
Places like the Kwinana offroad area is good for beginers.... it offers some challenging hills that to the un-experienced may seam impossible but turn out to be easy with practise.
The Rockingham area west of dixon road contains a lot of bush land that can also be fun but relatively un-challenging.
In the other hand somewhere like Harvey is good if you want to die.
And remember... never go offroading on your own... most have learnt this the hard way.

never go on your own does that mean as the only car or the only actual person?
Kwinana Offroad area - would that be the small section int he road map that is marked as Off road vehicle stie jsut off thomas road?
im pretty sure i wont end up going to these places as they would incur a very very hefty fee from a tow truck if i had to get it towed back home for some reason

NEVER EVER go on your own... and it is a very very bad idea to go anywhere with only one car.
Yes the kwinana offroad area is that area marked on the map. They have taken a few measures to stop vehicles getting in there but where there is a will... there is a way.

post away up here matatak... there's more than just yourself who are new to the offroad thing (at least as far as doing it yourself / running repairs goes) (eg .. me)
These guys are very helpful if you ask the right questions.
get stuck into that low range.. i wish i had it. You will be very surprised where your suby will get you.
Also, going with somebody else will give you more confidence, which can be good and bad... but i reckon it's good because often with 4x4 if you don't have confidence you hesitate and then you get stuck.
I'm sure anybody here will be more than happy to go out to gnangara with ya.
