Defected for Sunnys
Defected for Sunnys
Hi guys, just a heads up, I got defected for having sunnys on my Lseries. I didn't think cops would care but their track is too wide apparently. Just thought id post it so you know what to possibly expect.
what do you mean? sunnys as in window tint?

Usually on a MY they are fine, because their track is slightly narrower.
But on an L the track makes Desert Rats, Sunrasias, Coyotes etc. wider than the wheel arches.
Go to Clark Rubber and get some rubber arch flare and screw to the underside of your mudguards

Could anyone tell me what wheels these are? sorry I don't have a closeup, since I don't know what they're called I couldn't google it
Anyway Dad has these wheels on his L series at the moment (here in SA) and they stick ever so slightly outside the stock wheel arches. I can always tell because it looks a bit cooler than all the other L's
But they don't rub and he's never had a problem with cops or when he gets his tyres changed they don't say anything...

Yep the old Performance mags on my L wagon (Same as old Pug 505 wheels) stick out past the body line like the proverbeal. When I got the RWC last month the Mechanic made mention of it, as I expected. So far no hassle from the fuzz bout it..

As for the sunny's - I doubt they're the standard rim as they do not protrude outside the guard, unlike desert rats or speedies, I'm not sure which one I'm running with the 27's but they stick out almost an inch up front and half an inch at the rear.
I'm just not keen on drilling holes in my guards to put flares on, but will look into the type of flares that screw in from under the flare rather than through the side (which is where I have the issue).
So what where you doing? Cops look at me, the local one here at lakes almost snapped his neck the first time he saw it - and that was with stock tyre diametre but a three inch lift...
Cheers
Bennie
Silverbullet you probably should have started another thread with this question, however the wheels are made by Performance. Sorry I do not know the 'name' of the style but if you look closely at the painted black area where the wheel nuts go you will see 'Performance Wheels', or something like that.Silverbullet wrote:Could anyone tell me what wheels these are? sorry I don't have a closeup, since I don't know what they're called I couldn't google itAnyway Dad has these wheels on his L series at the moment (here in SA) and they stick ever so slightly outside the stock wheel arches. I had very similar mags on my RS2000 Escort about 25yrs ago, I think they would still look good to this day.

End Hijack.
Think I'll be looking into some flares

Early Subarus had wheels with an offset more like a RWD wheel. With the L Series in '84 the offset was like a FWD rim.Silverbullet wrote:Oh ok thanks! just thought I'd mention it here because these wheels are a bit wide on the L and I didn't have a better pic.
My 1978 Wagon has Peugeot 505 15 inch rims and they fit within the guards perfectly. On an MY they would 'just' fit at the front and on a L they would stick out past the guards.
Gotta say I love the photo you posted! The side stripe suits the wheels to a 'T'.

I knew it was only a matter of time before this would happen. Always known Speedy Desert Rat 14" wheels are illegal...

Driving home from the south coast back to Adelaide, to make it worse I just had a defect removed 30mins before at victa for spotties mounted on the roof, hehe. Cop was standing on the side of the road looking at cars and pulled me because of the over sized track. According to the cop even rubber flares wouldn't make it roadworthy as they stick out from the original chassis. Seems to be heaps of inconstancy in the rules, really unfair but what can ya do?sven '2' wrote:What were you doing at the time the Police stopped you?
I do not think there is really any inconsistency, you are simply not allowed to increase the track by more than 25mm. This of course makes Desert Rats and similar wheels illegal. Having said that some people do get by with adding flares...Lenigas wrote:Driving home from the south coast back to Adelaide, to make it worse I just had a defect removed 30mins before at victa for spotties mounted on the roof, hehe.
