the best advice I can give is to put an ej motor + awd box in it, even an ej18 is head and shoulders above an ea82.
In all seriousness, whip off the oil filler cap when its running and put your hand over the tube to feel for excess blowby, check the inside of the cap for coffee whilst your there.
Give the water pump pully a wiggle to see if theres any slop, rough guide to how shagged the bearing is. (worn bearing will quickly wear a seal.)
Buubles in the radiator are not cool, also look for salty residue (because we all use distilled water right?) around the overflow bottle for more possible evidence of shot head gaskets.
Turn the heater on when you test drive it, even if its stinking hot. A leaking core is not fun in winter and will make bargining easier.
Any more details? Tourer? Injected?

EJ22 Dual range AWD lifted, widened and much happier now thanks very much.
1991 L Series wagon, white and perfectly normal apart from the ticking, no I think that is normal.
Jet boat..webbered EA81 with a hybrid tin dish welded and glued to it.
