Ea 82 carby - which one????
Does anyone know which carby i should have on my L Series 1988 4wd wagon as in the model. The current carby seems to be the right one but i am having problems with it, about 1 minute after start up and driving up the road it will burn smoke for around a further minute and then clear to no further smoke- i tried a different carby that was obviously the wrong one and this eliminated the smoke burn off, but it didnt run right either. I thought first it may have been the valve rubbers deteriorating (but after changing the carby it didnt do it) so i am at a loss to that theory now. The car idles nicely and runs to 90km/h okay but after that there is nothing left when you stand on the throttle (for about the last 1/3 of throttle). Does anyone know what could be causing this along with some ideas on the correct power valve/jets i should be using in the carby, size wise. Could i have an issue with the cat converter/exhaust or some other thing- also when driving along at no particular time there will be a rattle that comes and goes- similar to a thrush bearing noise-that i cant seem to locate may this be in the cat converter or any other suggestions. The 5 speed gearbox at around 70-80 kms wants top gear-is this correct for this gearbox, im only used to driving the ea81 subies. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated along with any suggestions regarding this dilemma, also how do you know if the front timing cogs are set correctly- with the plastic covers off i have one locating hole at the top the other side is at the bottom, i have timed it with a timing light and all appears correct even so when you reverse the timing light it indicates the btdc is also correct, if its timed correctly i beleive the problem is in the carby, exhaust or heads. I am hoping to get some ideas without having to extract the motor and fix the problem. i have done the head gaskets and timing all acording to the gregories service manual, but may i have missed something, awaiting some suggestions

G'day Richard.
First off - the cam belt timing - you've got it correct, and when you set it up the other way like you've tried, effectively you've turned the crankshaft over one rotation so everything is where it should be... again (though the cycle).
As for the smoke - this could be clogged PVC pipes - sometimes they get an oily build up and if this makes it to the carbie you'll get a dump of blue smoke out the back. If its dark smoke, black in colour, I'd say your carbie runs rich while the auto choke is on, once this opens up the smoke would disappear.
For the gearing, your not driving your subi hard enough - and I'm guessing that you don't have a tacho... At 100 in 4th you'll be pulling 4000rpm, at 110 it'll be about 4200 (according to the tacho on my L, but is probabily more at 110km/h). At 80 in 3rd you'll also be doing about 4000rpm. The subi isn't a performance machine although I try to drive mine like one
Phil might be right about the secondary butterfly not opening if you can't get over 90km/h - these are vacuum operated (and subsequently suck) so check the carbie for a loose/broken/cracked vacuum line - check all vacuum lines while you're there, one hose that's disconnected and your economy/performace will be shot to pieces.
Cheers
Bennie

Agree with Freddo about the PCV pipes. Mine were blocked up with carbon causing oil to come up through the sump breathers. Obviously, you'll soon work out if this is your problem tho as your air cleaner will be full of oil.
I also had that random ratteling noise from what I thought was the cat, turned out to be the front uni joint on the tailshaft. Something to check atleast.
cheers

standard interogation question - black smoke (fuel) , blue smoke (oil) or white smoke (watter)?
When you tried the other carb did you hook up all the vacuum pipes and breathers as the original coz word is that one of the many hoses can contribute to oil smoke if it is broken or disconnected or blocked or something.

carby update
thanks for the replies, i have purchased another carby and installed it now- at the minute it seems to be working ok. the smoke from the other carb was a greyish colour, and im thinking the carby was probably getting worn out. i have not taken it for a good run yet but idling/revving it sounds better. i now just have to try to locate the electrical wires to hook up the choke- do they have this connection on the 88 wiring harness?
