97 Outback Engine troubles

Post by Giffo » Sat Nov 29, 2008 2:31 pm

Gday all, Im Giffo and new to the forum.I have a April 1997 Outback,Engine Type EJ25DNACJA,and the motor is coughing and spluttering then either cutting out alltogether or it will stop spluttering and run normal. The symptoms are just like it is running out of petrol. When the motor stops it will start straight away with no problems.I have had it to 2 mechanics (not subaru dealers) and they had it on computer with no problems, relaced spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, tested the pressure of the fuel pump. This problem can happen 3 or 4 times in a few Ks or run for a hundred with no worries. Then as of yesterday, it will not go into park only as far as reverse.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Giffo

Could be a number of things. Maybe fuel pressure regulator playing up (drivers side at the back of the inlet manifold), possibly the vacuum hose on it or it could actually be the fuel pump or ignition relay malfunctioning (inside the car - A pillar - right up behind the fuses - PITA to get to - fuel is a round canister and will have a green plug going to it, ignition is a brown squarish box right beside it) , loss of power to the computer (passengers floor at the front where your feet go). Or, another one that is a little more common is the electrical connection under the back seat, drivers side, where it goes through the body and down to the fuel pump.

Is your dash lights coming on when it happens? Fuel guage still working?

This would almost definitely be unrelated to the spluttering problem. This could be a problem with your shifter linkage, perhaps a collapsed nylon bush.

For spluttering try swapping for a known working air flow meter, often they can cause issues like that without causing the ECU to throw any engine codes.
