MY06 WRX Secondary Air Valve

Post by breNdzz » Wed Feb 24, 2010 11:06 am

Hi guys,

I have recently began having the engine light on and flashing cruise control.

I went to subaru and they told me it was the secondary air pump valve that is blocked, (as per my understanding) basically this "part" sucks in extra air I believe from the exhaust? as part of the "choke" system when you first start the car, this part/pump runs for maybe 5 minutes a day depending on temperature etc.

My problem is has anyone else had this issue before, subaru melb want to charge almost 4.5 grand to fix this which to me seems majorly excessive.

Its for emissions, it pumps extra air into the exhaust on cold start.

Do a search on IWSTi.com for "Air Pump Mod" or something like that.
It has instructions on how to take it out, what you need etc.
I *think* the light stays on, but you can get Opensource /Romraider, and a Tactrix cable to remove the light/code.
Read up on IWSTi.com, NASIOC.com and ClubWRX.net.

I dunno how they got that $4.5k to fix, the actual pump (P/N 14828AA030) RRP is $2073.80 and the 2 valve's (P/N's 14868AA020 and 14864AA030) RRP is $715.46 each.
The pump is held in by 4 bolts or so, the harness and a hose, and the valve's are held in by a bolt or 2, a hose, the harness and the actual metal pipes.
So even if they charged you full retail price ($3504.72), $1k in labour is effing ridiculous...

Make a post on wrx.com.au (Vic based WRX club), the foreman at Dockland's goes on there abit and might help.

I totally agree, like I looked at it, did a little research, I couldn't find prices but the actual work itself looked nothing specific not special tools required really(perhaps a safe ramp is only specialised thing required).

I'm no expert but am quite handy with cars and even I think I could do the job in an hour maybe 1.5hrs if something went wrong.

They are claiming 5 hours work(which works out ~$200 per hour to unbolt and rebolt 4 items and roughly 4 plugs (intercooler, 2xvales, 4 hoses, 1pump, and battery), which I find completely insane.

I've frequented my dealership, for every service paying for all the little things they recommend me replacing etc, and when something as silly as this goes wrong they don't look after me at all, I guess this is what loyalty gets you.

I have just had the same problem come up in mine.
I can hear the deeper sound in the exhaust constantly instead of just for the 1st 10 seconds or so.
Might have to look into the air pump delete mod plates if going to cost that much!
