I have worked on the motors out of the car but I am only surmising about dropping the sump in car, I have no problem with being corrected on this from someone who actually knows (I assume you have tried it) , I just thought from looking at it that the sump could be dropped.
And I have replaced big ends and mains 'in car' on other makes, just takes a bit of thought.
The point with the pump and belts was that the pump is a relatively easy repair and might fix the knock, and as the belts have to be disturbed to do the pump, and the front of the car has been dismantled anyway, the belts might as well be replaced. And someone did suggest replacing the belts cured his knock.
worth a try.

Gday, You've got to split the block to do big ends and mains on a subaru.

Mains yes.. Big Ends not necessarily so but better if apart :) I've seen it done but wouldn't recommend it ;)
You know you are getting old when the candles on your birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.
