strange sound Impreza RX 2010

Post by Soobian » Tue Oct 26, 2010 8:32 pm

Hi everyone
I have recently bought a 2010 Impreza RX manual hatch.
I'm really happy with it except it has this annoying noise that sounds like a faulty wheel bearing but only on the front left side.
I've mentioned it to the dealer and at 2,500km the front left brake rotor was replaced.
I've just had the 6 month service done which was at 6,500km, mentioned the wheel bearing noise again and was told it was a small stone and has been removed.
Unfortunately the same sound is bugging me and can anyone suggest what else it could be (or is a low frequency grinding type noise normal) so I can get the dealer to check that.
Plus can anyone suggest a good Subaru service centre, northside of Brisbane preferred but happy to travel for quality service and advise.

many thanks for your help

Ian

feedback, feedback, feedback - they deserve to be told it is , or something very much like it, is stil there or has returned. Ask for a loaner until they have yours sorted and you are happy with it.

An exhaust heat shield?
Take it to another dealer?

update

thanks for the comments,
I took it back to where I bought it as it's closer to work.
the opinion was it's;
A, normal running sound for an Impreza, Liberty's are quieter
B, I have sensitive hearing

was also advised to pump the tire pressure up to 38psi or 36psi if I find the ride too hard.

thanks
Ian

Hi there,
well by the sound of it you are getting the runaround by the dealer my suggestion would be to get the RACQ to inspect it and provide a written report just for your own peace of mind if nothing else.

Hi and Welcome Ian

I have friend who has the same issue with his 2009 Liberty and he also has taken it back to the dealer about 6 times and they also are fobbing him off. At the next service, they machined the discs and replaced the pads (noise gone) but before the next service the noise was back. The dealership said they would just machine the discs again. My friend Ian (maybe it's in the name :???: just kidding) was not happy and he said, he brought a brand new car and should not need/want machined discs every service. When he told me about this I suggested we put DBA rotors and a set of good Bendix pads on it but he said the car is still under warranty and this may void his warranty. I haven't spoken to him again about it but will let you know what his outcome was.

Sorry can't be more help and hope you get it sorted.

Cheers,
Paul

it's going back again

Thanks Paul

I'm taking my car back again to Subaru as I phoned them to ask for the report that I took it in last week and they didn't find anything wrong,
they had nothing on record which really annoyed me so they put me onto the mechanic manager who went for a test drive with me,
he asked what did I want, I said I'd like a copy of the report which states I brought my car in complaining of a bearing type noise and you said there was nothing wrong,
he said why, I said because there is a problem with the car and just wanted your written statement saying there wasn't,
he said bring the car in tomorrow,

hopefully it will get sorted, I don't partially want to spend money on replacing parts myself when it's under warranty and Subaru has a good name, it should have good parts. After 3 years I'd put the good gear on.

it might be the same dealer

thanks for the support
Ian

Hi everyone
I am suitably impressed with the dealer, mechanic and Subaru.
I was informed they spent a considerable time checking my car against another Impreza, trying a different set of tyres, drive shaft and came to the conclusion what I must be hearing is normal.
For peace of mind they replaced the wheel bearing for me.
I'll get used to the sound.
thanks Ian
