L series keeps stalling out.please help
gday guys i have an L series carby model and i am now having this problem where it keeps stalling after about 10secs of running..This is why i am baffled,it still has fuel so not the pump or carby,,so im guessing electrical but what would let it run for 10secs and then kill power,,have changed coil with no difference..(It allready has plugs and leads done but they normally just miss if faulty)cant figure it out as never had this happen before,,I would have thought if dizzy was gone it just would not start at all??????any ideas ,,cheers justin

gday,its a complete cut,you can pump it all you like and still no go just dies straight away no mater what the revs are(on idle or driving)once it stops you can turn the key again and it will run but only for about 10secs again,all fuses are good and was running sweet before this,,it only sat for a month then went to drive it again then this happened,cheers justin

Me thinks it fuel delivery i.e carby or related. Are you certain its an electrical/electronic fault? Maybe remove air filter cover, start engine then squirt some Start Ya Bastard or similar into carby before it conks out. Just to see if that keeps it idling. Then we shall take it from there. BTW is all this happening from a cold or hot start situation (or both). As much info as possible please.
I took the air cleaner of and as soon as it died i pump the accellerater and there is fuel still pumping into it and i can still hear the fuel pump pumping,,,definatly no alarm system fitted..has spark and runs but wen it dies unsure if its losing spark as it will just start up again?????i definatly think its something electrical but dont understand what would cause it as most items usually just kill the motor or cause a miss, not kill it then allow it to start and run fine for 10secs...
Might just throw a few things out there, cause it has as you say been left dormant for a month or so...
1)What state of charge is the battery in?
2)Is the alternator doing its job? (maybe check for loose belt or terminals)
3)Do you have old or enough petrol in the tank?
4)Generally check all electrical terminals/connectors.
5)Do you have an inductive timing light you could perhaps connect and watch as engine starts then stalls!
6) has anybody else used the car and perhaps had mishap they have not disclosed.
7) I'm running out ideas right about now......

Ive read all the suggested answers and Im not looking for an argument Im trying to help.

The engine can still cut out if fuel solenoid is faulty, took me half a day to ID the problem on a hitachi carby about 10 years ago. Very similar symptoms engine would start and run fine then cut out completely with no explaination. Turned out that while the insulation on the wire was in one piece the wire wasn't.
other culprits to check
fusable links may look fine but faulty or the connectors are covered in corrosion. causing power to halt abruptly. (having had this happen at night in the middle of no where it is possible)
1. points dizzy a. hi tension wire from power input to points little yellowish wire inside the dizzy(same as above insulation looks fine inner wire stuffed) b. faulty cap or rotor button check for cracks pitting destroyed contact inside cap or even the little carbon button thats held in by the spring.
2. breaker less ignition (electronic) a.faulty module (as stated in other posts) b.wires from coil to distributor, check for cracks in the insulation on the wire right near the rubber that holds the wires in the dizzy. c. faulty cap or rotor button check for cracks pitting destroyed contact inside cap or even the little carbon button thats held in by the spring (yep repeating myself

3. fuse inside the car check that the igniton fuse is in good condition and firmly in place pull it out and visually inspect it, dont just push on it like most people do as that is all that is happening.
4. pray to your deity of choice if nothing else works or threaten car with large blunt instrument.

Just found out that when ign 1st turned on fuel pump has power but while running no more power to the fuel pump..im guessing whats happening is that its running on what fuel was pumped up then stalls out but when it stops while ign is on it pumps again(for a sec) and this is what has given me the false impression that there is still fuel in the carbie..A quick look at a wiring diagram and i can see that the wires for the pump go to((ENGINE REVOLUTION SENSOR))Now i didnt know that carby models had such a thing but hay you learn something new every day...So my next question here would be where would i find this,i was told by someone else to check the kick panels but there is nothing there..From what i can tell it has a six plug wiring going into it but i just cant find anything..cheers justin
