I have not read this whole thread but I felt cyber space eyes searching for me and here I is .

Your call but I think if a radiator core is in need of rodding it needs replacing . They have a life and after that its never the same .
Yes you can resort to water radiators in the heater lines but that just tells me the radiator isn't coping .
If you want to be sure you are getting all the air out drill a couple of small holes through the outer section of an old known thermostat for trial purposes .
LOL I once had an old G11 84 Charade with a blown headgasket and Coxy had some wire tied through the thermostat to stop it fully closing . The idea was to be a bit open when cold to stop the gas pressure leaks blowing the water out and overheating it . Again LOL the new genuine $20 head gasket and an hours work fixed that .

I guess if a working thermostat/radiator/waterpump doesn't fix then you may have to pull the heads off and look inside .
