interisting temp issue outback 1998

Post by Bundo » Mon Jun 25, 2012 8:47 pm

Hi All,

On the weekend i trailered the lancer rally car from Brisbane to Scone NSW about 700 KLM. ran perfect all the way down and half way back.

Just as i got to Gleninnis 13000 feet high and about zero deg the temp gauge went off the dial and spat water from the radiator. i stopped and liffted the bonnet. rad was cold. very cold motor did not smell hot and was running well.

topped up the water and all was good again for about another 100ks. it only went hot on the flat or down hill run.. verry odd.

when it up the and came back down at the same speed.

My thought is:

as it was sooooo cold the water in the radiator was freezing and holding the thermostat closed making the water spit out.

once i got to Stanthorp it did not happen again. at this stage the outside temp rose to about 1deg.

any thoughts????

If you're not running anti freeze/anti boil you could have possibly frozen the radiator - it's pretty common around my pero's joint during the frost times.

But then again, if it was slow going I'd doubt the radiator was frozen.

How many k's on the clock and have the head gaskets ever been changed? It could be the early signs of a blown HG :(

Monitor it, and if you don't see it again you should be right.

Cheers
