EJ 22 running on 3 cylinders help.

Post by lovey80 » Mon Jul 02, 2012 5:37 pm

Hey all more trouble shooting and more to come it seems.

The EJ 22 has an interesting problem. The passenger rear cylinder doesn't seem to be firing. When disconnecting just that lead from the plug the engine doesn't change it's idle but doing so on the other three makes it want to stall.

Have changed the plug and swapped the leads to isolate those two- all good. I would normally think it wasn't getting fuel after this but the plug comes out black and wet and the others are grey and dry.

Taking the lead off and fitting it to a new plug and holding it against the body shows excellent spark so the coil seems to be fine.

Any troubleshooting suggestions?

try a compression test to see if its low could have a burnt valve check the oil tube for compression escaping and cylinder for noise could be letting the compression out by a cracked ring or piston

injector wetting the plug with a dribble rather than atomised spray, try a fuel cleaner and drive it like you stole it. If you can find the one I used to get through Grace Cosmetics MLM crowd, forget its name - terrific stuff one 500ml bottle treated 625 litre fuel - ProMa !

Tried a generic injector cleaner today and did as steptoe suggested to no avail. The subie boys at gympie have a spare inlet manifold they have offered for me to swap injectors to see if that fixes it.

Can an injector be cleaned if removed or is it likely to be stuffed altogether?

removal is required for proper sonic cleaning and metering , have even seen on Fords, dodgy rubber injector seals in manifold leak air and cause grief

Ok so I picked up a whole inlet manifold from Rick today. Tomorrow I get to teach myself how to remove and replace an injector. Any tips for young players?

When you disconnect fuel pump and run engine until it stops you bleed off the pressure, stops spitting fuel everywhere when you undo the rail. Pull a fuel pump fuse , relay or electrical connector. Watch the big rubber seals either stay in manifold or with injector, not the ground, put white sheet under to catch stuff -so you see it (unless it is white thing you drop )

I took the fuel rail off the engine and it looked pretty bad on both injectors so I swapped the whole rail. 6 bolts and 20 minutes later, problem solved.

Runs smooth as silk now and the low down power is completely fixed.

Thanks heaps for all your help.
