Starting 83' Wagon Electrical issue??

Post by kodez23 » Sat Dec 01, 2012 6:12 pm

Trying to start an 83' wagon that hasn't been started in 18 months. Just getting a click form under the bonnet (starter motor??) when I turn the key, Is this a weak battery or something else? Anything else to be mindful of starting on of these that hasn't been fired up in a while??
Cheers,

Sounds like a flat battery or loose connections.

the biggest problem you colud have is stale fuel and rust in the cylinder bores, if you are really worried remove the plugs spray some CRC or WD40 in the bores. let it sit for a little while then crank it over with out the plugs in.

Most EA motors refuse to die, so I think this one will be ok :)

Thanks Toonga,
It was cranking over ok but not starting, I guess I just flattened the battery and all it could do was click. I was being careful not to give it too much and burn out the starter motor (is that a common occurrence with these cars?). I've checked all the fuses, they're ok. I wasn't sure if it may have had a relay switch or anything like that that may have died. It also has some weird after market ignition switch on it??

When i got this car i put a battery in and turned it over a couple of times just to see if it would. I was encouraged when it did but realised I probably just sucked a big gulp of stale petrol through the system in the process. I have since drained the tank and put some fresh petrol and some 'Flash lube' valve saver fluid in the tank. Should a drain the carby, fuel pump or lines to get all the stale fuel out? Any other starting hints?
Cheers,
Again,
Dave.

Throw a splash of fuel down the carburettor. That should get it to kick over for a bit. It got my old brumby going after a long spell.

Yeah, I sprayed some 'start ya bastard' in the air cleaner but still didn't fire. Tomorrow I'll check the state of the air filter which I should have done today. A mate of mine got the old Landrover in my driveway started by simply removing the old clogged air filter to let clean air get in. The mix was probably a bit air rich but it got it started.
