No secondary jet function on EA82, don't know what else to try
Hey everyone,
So here is my story, not too long ago I bought an L series and set about restoring it for a roadworthy, however, it has no power in high revs.
I quite quickly determined that it was a Seconday jet problem and set about properly rearranging the hoses to the Carby Manifold, valves and canisters as they were ALL hooked up wrong. This made no difference.
I then checked all the valves and charcoal canister for leakage or failure and it was all fine.
Today, I pulled the carb down and installed a carby kit, I found o rings that were quite misshapen and replaced everything and blew the jets out with a compressor. This certainly gave it awesome low rev range power but the seconday jet is still not squirting fuel in to the carby when I put the foot down. If I disconnect and suck on the vacuum line going to seconday it will open as it is supposed to, however, for some reason it will not open as per normal operation when the motor is running. I was using a clip I made to open the seconday throat when the primary throat is 2/3 open although this is not the way it should be and with it the car uses too much fuel to be my touring car.
Sorry for the length of this but I don't like to ask anyone until I have tried all I can think off and am out of ideas, such as now. Any help, advice, suggestions, theories are more than welcome.
Cheers,
Lincoln

Have you tried ....nah, you wouldn't have ...what if you got a nice long length of vacuum hose and had a passenger suck on it when you think the secondary should open and see if that makes a difference ? I don't know if the L carby has same thing as MY Hitachi in that it has an air valve above the throttle plate butterfly, is not a cold start choke choke, but it is gonna choke the secondary off unless preset circumstances come into play

Sounds like either a hose not right, a cracked hose, or a blocked hose somewhere. I had issues with my EA81 Brumby carby and even after a rebuild, it still wasn't right. Turned out to be the anti-backfire canister and a oneway valve looking thing on the side of the aircleaner.
IMO, if you want power and economy then look at fitting a weber. I know this sounds like a contradiction in words to say power and economy but the weber really does have good economy when turned right. They do use a lot more fuel when on full song (which you get more power from) but you are generally not hard on the accelerator as long as you would with the standard carby. If you get what I mean.

You know you are getting old when the candles on your birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.

I had the same problem on one of the EA81's I had in my wagon. Even after rebuild the vacuum operated secondary would not open under any circumstances. I just replaced the whole carby which fixed the problem

Will it ever end!?

Thanks guys,
Yes Steptoe, I have tried this and it does kick in when a second person sucks while engine running which is another reason I'm baffled. Also, are you saying that if the secondary kicks in with engine running it is either not the air valve above the butterfly (or I don't have one)?
Thanks RSR, I am a big believer that power and economy can go together if operated under normal (or less harsh than normal circumstances), will definitely look into a Weber (I think I still have two old ones around here somewhere).
And yeah Cheers SilverBullet, a new/second hand carby is definitely option I have considered. Am still considering...

G'day Lincoln, welcome to AUSubaru
:p
Sorry, couldnt help a visual image of a passenger reluctantly sucking on the hose as you yell "full power, full power!"

Leave a vaccuum hose in the cabin to suck on when you want full power? LOLEllie and Friends wrote: Yes Steptoe, I have tried this and it does kick in when a second person sucks while engine running which is another reason I'm baffled

I know nothing about the carby setup but it really does sound like a blockage or leak somewhere. If you've replaced the hoses & rebuilt the carby it should have fixed it!And yeah Cheers SilverBullet, a new/second hand carby is definitely option I have considered. Am still considering...

If they work from in the cabin, then you must have a vacuum port blockage where the hose comes from.Ellie and Friends wrote:Thanks guys,

Try sucking on the port from the carb. If no vacuum signal from the primary venturi, then no secondary operation.
Probably a piece of old hose blocking the port.
