EA81 engine won't start
Hi all
I hope you can help me out here
I have a 83 GLF Leone coupe & it will not start.
has spark at the coil & coil lead
has spark at the points ( points are new )
has spark at the plugs
has fuel at the pump
has fuel in the carby
has fuel at the accelerator plunger
You can spray Aero start at it & it still won't fire
what am i missing here?
All help would be greatly appreciated

Yes the engine loom plugged is plugged in. I have also changed the solenoid on the carb this carb only has the single solenoid.The ignition timing correct.
All i have done is drive the car then stop it when i got home and thats where it has stayed. the car was easy to start but in time it was getting harder but once it was going it was ok till you put some rev's into it it just leaned out and backfired from the exhaust.
All i have done is changed the points,plugs and the solenoid on the carb which i was told would fix the problem
I have been having a go again as we speak i just a little fire but that is it.

yes the points are opening and closing as they should.There is spark at the points too.
It Just started to pour rain so i have to stop again for another day.
Next step is to take the carby off & spray some areostart in the manifold to see if it is the carby.

Have you done a compression test on the engine?
It's funny there ain't much that can really go wrong with an EA81 - the only "just stopped" one I saw was an '84, one of the ones with no points. The electronic module that replaced the points had died. Obviously not applicable here!

Monster Subaru sold to a good home!! Still a Subaru owner. Will try stay in the Ausubaru loop. Sorry

I have 'nt done a comp test on it but i will.
The engine has two dry plugs on the left bank & 2 wet plugs on the right bank
( when you are facing the engine from the front )
The whole car has only done 112000 km's from new it's been a one owner car.

Hey mate
Check your point gap by first closing the gap to a slightly
smaller gap if that doesnt work then open them a little more .
After that then change your timing by hand as you crank the motor.
Ive had moments when it was all working but not firing.
It was always one of those two things

But if the timing has not been changed when it was running it should be fine.I have changed the point's cap with no change at all.I will try a different coil like Jordan suggested.The spark might be weak under compression.

I had the problem before changing the solenoid i was told by a Subaru place this was the problem (he sold is part made some money ) i still have the problem there is no vacuum line off.

I changed the coil turned the key fired first shot.I guess the coil was shot so under compression no spark.

I know how fustrating it is with this one, I got stuck for 2 hours in the middle of no where trying to figure it out, finally tried changing it as a last resort after ruling out every other possibility, when it finally fired up I did a happy dance lap around the car

Thanks again for your help it had me baffled as there was spark,fuel strong battery.As you said the spark must be breaking down being too weak.
Just let me know when you are ready with the parts for your projects.
