EA81 dead in its tracks - heads up for others!
Yesterday I sorted an issue on my brumby. The night before I went over a speed bump (not hard either!) and the engine just died.
I managed to get it started again, it idled for about 3 mins then died when I tried to drive it off. Couldn't start it from there.
I thought it was the dizzy module so replaced that with a new one I had ready for this situation. Still no go.
Did numerous checks and it all pointed to the coil. Got a new one. Still no go. Things were pointing back at the module. Replaced the module with a second hand one of unknown condition I had kicking around. BINGO - EA81 was a goer once again!
So in summary:
If your EA81 dies suddenly, check both the coil and the module - if you are suspicious of the coil run a known good one before replacing the module!
Hopefully this thread will save others a few bucks - as I've killed a $75 module that was straight out of the box
Cheers

+1 for always keeping spare module with you! if you have electronic ignition. Mine died half way round a left hand turn at some traffic lights, good thing I had enough momentum to finish the turn and ditch it into the gutter
It's worth buying the genuine/known brand units too, they may be more money but are more relaible.

Regarding coil and module replacement, it's wise to replace in pairs. The secret is in knowing it's called an 'ignition system', and by system it all needs to work pretty close to 100% to function correctly.
All too often I've seen people leave spark plugs too long between changes (our modern fuels are really, really hard on spark plugs) so a spark plug dies. As the plugs age, their gap gets bigger, and as a result the spark voltage increases.... This increase stresses the leads and the coil(s).... and then because the coil is stressed it makes the ignitor/module work harder!!!!
So I see a car come in with a miss fire, replace the failed plug lead, call the owner "it's running but I recommend spark plugs as well"...they don't want to spend the money. Guess how the phone call goes two weeks later?? "The cars doing the same thing! You didn't fix it!!!"
On Falcons, I don't even give them the option, if I'm replacing coil or module, I'm replacing both.
PS: Using a genuine second hand module can be better than new aftermarket (sadly this is the modern world)..... Yep, my shop ute went through two NEW brand name crank sensors within months. I ratted through my parts box, found a second hander and been driving on that for the last 5 years!

No more $100 on ebay, couldn't handle the competition. The other links are cheaper.Subyroo wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 4:00 pmAre these the same module Toonga?TOONGA wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 12:59 pmBrisBrumby search for CM417 Ignition Module ebay has them for around 100 dollars repco and supacheap are a little cheaper.BrisBrumby wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 8:55 amThanks for the tip, do you have a link to the module? G'day Legends,
How did go about swapping the module out of the dizzy?
We are currently stuck at the reluctor wheel.

G’day Dan,
You need to gently lever the relict or wheel up with two flat bladed screwdrivers. Once you get it moving it generally comes off easily.
Make sure you reinstall it the correct way around.
Cheers
