Sealed Bearing kit - dumb question

Post by mandogbrumby » Sun Jan 14, 2007 10:19 am

Hi all,

Replacing the Brumby front wheel bearing kits. Have obtained the sealed variety rather than the open ball and race. I assume it's all nicely greased up inside.. but do I stick a bit of bearing grease BETWEEN the inner and outer bearing. I assume I don't need to BUT.. err on the side of caution and ask. I've only ever installed non-sealed bearings (ie grease them to buggery and back again)

Cheers

Fit grease whereever you can in there.

I second that motion. They are already greased up, but I'd still stick grease between them, if for nothing more than to aid with cooling in the hub.

Ta.. I was inclined to and even bought a tub of bearing grease for it.. just in cases...
What with water restrictions.. this may be as clean as it gets for a while..

I would put in high temp. grease in the hub, not normal grease because it'll melt and weep down.. That would make life easier to install/remove if needed.

Flick the seals out and repack them with grease before you fit them then i agree with above and put grease in between the bearings as well.

There could be a problem...mixing greases of unknown base...could be no harm in just packing the other bearing grease everywhere else but under the flipped out seals. Just ask the manufacturers about mixing grease brands/types on their 1800 number if still available, i got the blow on the stuff some years back - don't mix it and stick to your known/preferred brands

Its not that hard to degrease the new bearings and repack them......LOL.
I do this on my bikes and repacked my L-Series existing bearings with new grease. I just used a pressurised can of Contact Cleaner as the degreaser to blow them out in the hub. (lucky I dont have to pay for Contact Cleaner!)

I would leave the outside seal in the bearing and flick out the inside one, as the grease expands and needs relief into the housing when it gets hot.

Well, it's done. I left all the internal seals in place, packed between the spacer with (naturally) high temp bearing grease. All good and smooth and the steering wheel doesn't shimmy and shake anymore.. LOVE it. Thanks for the advice all...
