MY99 Forester fault codes

hi all
need a bit of help.

My my99 foz is throwing up a check engine light just after a cold start.
hangs around for a minute or so and dissapears.

how do i extract the code? Cant find stuff all on the web..

My mech mate has a plug in diagnostic thing, but he's away for a few weeks and i was hoping to get it sorted by then...

any ideas anyone???

Need To Plug Into Subaru Select Moniter For Codes If It Goes Away After A Little While Then Its Not Fatal Just Reminding You To Get It Checked So Wait For Your Mate
