i have a funny grinding noise coming from the tailshaft(fairly sure). I stumbled over something tonight, i was dragging a commonwhore in the wet. Shoved it in 4wd and got upto 100 pretty quick(way infront of the commodre ) when i noticed the sound had gone, so i chucked it back into 2wd and the grinding came back! any ideas???

Do your joints have Grease nipples on them??? Mine do and i have a grease gun that suits... usually solves any noises in my tail shaft.
One of my many gear boxes had a grinding noise that would only go away when in 4wd... had to replace the box to fix it.... i hope u aint got a problem like that.

I've heard of people having less noises/grinding noises comming from their car when 4x4 is engaged. I seem to remember SubaMike used to run his MY wagon in 4x4 mode all the time to reduce noises and vibration...?
Something to do with the tailshaft being under abit of load so the uni joints can't rattle perhaps.
if ya racn people in 4wd on the road id say its ya g-box...if its not it soon will be..just remember you have more power now so your g-box wont last too long drivn around on the road in 4wd...i think you will find they go quicker in 2wd anyway......
Alex try 4wd in first and second the change to 2wd just b4 going into 3rd. hehe. as you get more power tho the wheels in 2wd but still get the launch via 4wd
if it's the uni joint it will go quieter when it has a real load on it , like 4WD.
my uni test is to find nice down slope ( or up slope, but point nose down !) with sound reflector like a wall or buildings and roll down in neutral, engine off, just a slow speed is enough coz you don't have good brakes in this mode. if you hear noise then, but could still be gbox
yeah under acceleration also leans towards the gear box being faulty.... but really do start with the obvious first.
For example... just after doing my EJ conversion my car devleoped a grind when slowing down using the gears... i was sure it was the wheel bearings... replaced them... replaced brake pads and rotors... replaced all the CVs... no change. Turns out the motor was slightly leaning forward making the alternator pully rub on one of the thermo fans.

OUCH ! better you doing that than paying a trained, qualified and experienced mechanic to go down exaxtly the same path ! I just did your trick to fix an oil leak. replaced dizzy o ring, bought oil pump kit, then it turned out to be a year old front crank seal cut up by a cracked shaft on me pulley !!
well after getting towed the whole way home yesterday the noise was there and it was getting worse, the noise was there whilst the car was idling, and moving...

Also could be exhaust rubbing on tailshaft, remember after the lift kit install it was basically on it, I know it's been re-jigged by the exhaust shop but it could have worked its way back close again - or possibly been squashed that way offroading. Check for clean spots metal sections on the tailshaft where it could have rubbed..
