Possible blown head gasket ej20g

Post by adamb » Fri Mar 21, 2008 10:01 pm

ok,

this engine is driving me nuts, just as i had got everything working perfectly, the engine started to misfire when under heavy load, such as offboost in 2nd doing 2000 revs. The next time i took it out it got worse, misfiring and backfiring and making for a very jerky ride off boost.

I started it up this morning and to my horror a shitload of white smoke started coming out of the exhaust, when revved it made quite a cloud. i let it get to operating temperature which took about 6-10 mins, and it was still doing it. I took it for a drive anyway and as soon as i did, all the smoke stopped, but it wasnt running quite right, felt like it was lacking power.

We suspected a head gasket had blown so i checked the oil, looked fine, checked the coolant, and when i rev the engine quite a few bubbles appear at the filler cap.

What do you guys think?

cheers,

adam

good possibility

but i would check the awesome rs turbo ignition coils..they have a BIG habbit of screwing around wif u ....that could be one of the courses of the misfiring

as for the smoke...could be head gasket...go to a mechanic shop get them to do a monoxide test in the cooling system...that will determine if its leaking gas into the coolin system or not

bubbles is not at all good. run it with the radiator cap of and if a steady stream of bubbles keep coming it is a sad day.

d3v1l meant to say rs turbo engine just incase you were getting confused. andrewt is having a similar problem with his ignition and is upgrading to bosch coils to fix it.

Bubbles could just be more air bleeding out of the system....but definitely that's good advice to get a monoxide test done.
The RS coil packs are renown for causing problems, I'm having a very minor one with mine but certainly nothing as severe as what you've described.

alright,

Well today i went and saw matatak and we did a teekay test, that confirmed it was not the head gasket. Both matatak and brennyv came for a drive and the general consensus was that the coil packs are ******. so ill be up for a bosch coil conversion.

Which bosch coils do i use? There is a few out there, some to use with resistors and some without.

Cheers for the teekay test mat.

I gave Adam this link...explains about the coil conversion.

Use the MEC716 (?) rather than the HEC716 - I used the HEC716 on mine and it's way too hard to get leads for them. The MEC716 ones have a female end rather than the male end.

Latest developments:

Ok, Dave came around last night and it seems it is idling on 3 cylinders. Found out that no.4 is the cylinder that refuses to fire. Took the coil out and it was sparking nicely. That leaves 2 other things it could be, compression or fuel.

When we started it up, we saw fuel coming out of the exhaust pipe which means it obviously has fuel thats not getting burnt. That leaves the last of the 3, compression.

Today when i started it a lot more smoke than usual started coming out out of the exhaust, still not sure what type but it does look like steam. There is still a lot of bubbles coming up out of the resovoir tank when revved as well.

Will a compression test tell me for sure if its the head gasket?

do a compression test.

but it wont pinpoint what it is for you.

if its low on compression it culd be the piston rings or the valve seats.

culd also be other things like intake gasket or stupid shit like that whic leans the mixture out to much and wont fire.

but get a comp test first lol

thanks brendan but ive got a compression tester, i did the dud cylinder and its up there at 151 psi, the same as the cylinder beside it. i have yet to do the other 2 cylinders on the opposite side, will do that tonight. looks like an injector has gone bad again on n0.4.

hey mat,

Nah i never changed the fuel filter on it, used the original from the cut. Ive just finished testing all cylinders, they are all exactly the same at 151 psi.
all the spark plugs looked the same and normal except for the one that wasnt firing, looked a lot blacker than the rest.

Look further into the stuck valve possibility, I'd make a post on rslibertyclub.org for advice...
