Hi,
Ive got a 92 NA lib, A couple of week ago my car played up with the cooling, temprature gauge spiked to above the H on hot. Shut it down and had a look. Had water but was like it wasn't circulating. Got it home and brand new radiator and thermostat later and its got problems again.

The temprature is just going up and doesnt stop till the car is turned off. Using a lot of water ( no leaks anywhere) and about 10 seconds after the car is turned off, the radiator starts making alien noises and the top radiator hose pumps in and out and then stops squeezed together.

When i rev the car with the radiator cap off, the water is sucked into the radiator and when its back to idle it spews water out everywhere.

Start the car up again and its fine till it gets warm again.

Car still goes well, no misses and revs hard, no loss of power.

Sorry if it doesnt make much sense but its the best way that i can describe it.

My ideas are : Head Gasket
Water Pump

Anyone else here have any ideas??

Thermostat....

Top hose squeezed together: Thermostat jammed shut.

It shouldnt be this cause i have replaced the thermostat 2 days ago, But nether the less i will check it again.

get a gas test on the cooling system ........

or fitted incorrectly

run it with no thermostat at all to rule it out as a problem

hey jarrod, bro subys are common for getting an air lock in the cooling system try bleeding the system again after u have ruled out the thermostat ok if not and u need a hand give me a buzz ok bro ill come round cheers Ben

Just be careful you dont fry the rear-most piston on the passenger side without the thermostat as you will get a hotspot on the back of the block.

Try it but make sure it is only for diagnostics otherwise you will fry the motor:???:

I would go with the gas test and a pressure test. I am thinking maybe thermo not in properly or a blockage(did you use gasket goo??)

i having exactly same problem with the mrs's 90 legacy turbo, am currently replacing waterpump....
dont suppose anybodies gota gud idea on how to get the crankshaft bolt off, as its an auto and no matter wat gear its in it still turns the motor
any help much appreciated

How would running no thermostat cause a hotspot on the back of the block?

Well all i have done is bypassed the heater and its fine so i gave the core a flush out and reconnected the heater. All fixed for the minute.

Now with the cold mornings the car barely gets to half on the temp guage.

That's weird... Maybe you dislodged something that was slowing the flow of water somewhere... I'm guessing that there is a certain amount of water that flows through the heater core regardless of thermostate position.

Well apparently the heater core is on a bypass circut anyway. When i flushed the core out, there wasn't any muck or gunk in it. The water flowed through clear and now the heater works even better than it did before.
