no wheel drive

i have just broke a ont cv on my 85 leone,its auto with push button 4wd,i have lost all drive but i want to know why it wont work as rear wheel drive until i replace front axle

With the push button pushed in I would think it should work as RWD.... Unless there's some sort of viscous setup between the front and the back and the complete lack of traction in that wheel is too much for the viscous to hold, but then that would be a pretty crap 4wd system...
