Fault codes and symptoms - help!

Post by SUBYDAZZ » Mon Oct 10, 2005 5:20 pm

Not sure how the new forums have been arranged, so assume all help related stuff goes in this part? Was going to put in in the engine, gearbox & diff section but looks like some selling or looking for those bits in there as well?

I'll cut to the chase:

Symptoms & Observations:

*Leaving camp area yesterday morning car is idling very high at 2000rpm and didn't die down, ambient temperature was not cold / cool. Never done that before.

*Engine sounds *a bit different*

*A couple of times starting warm/hot (ie: had been running but motor turned off for 5 or more minutes) yesterday would stall straight away, this has only ever been a problem on really hot days and on rare occasions in the past, and only if engine stopped for less than about 30 seconds. Started right on second go.

* Started today, idled high at 1500rpm. Continued to high idle for 20-30 seconds then drops down to normal idle / nearly stalls for 5 seconds and then loops back several times, check engine light on constant.

* Fault codes 11 - could be a symptom of the problem, not a cause and 24 - what is that one.

* Turn off, re-starts fine / normal.

* engine gets up to normal operationg temp but thermostat hasn't opened (cold lower radiator pipe) and top one is really hot and pressurised. After a bit of a drive, lower pipe gets hot too, top pipe is too hot to hold. Are either of these conditions normal? Coolant level condition is fine. Temp guage hasn't moved.

*Clear codes, still starts normal, am waiting for it to cool before play again.

I'd assume it is some cooling system or electrical issue, any thoughts anyone? Hope I gave enough information :)

OK, answered some of my own question. Knew I wrote these down somewhere in case I couldn't be bothered to find my Gregory's...

http://www.geocities.com/subarushrine/faultcodes.html

Code: 24

Item: Bypass air control (BAC) valve circuit

Contents of Diagnosis: Air control valve inoperative (Abnormal signal produced in monitor circuit)

Failsafe Operation: Prevents abnormal engine speed using "fuel cut" in relation to engine speed, vehicle speed, and throttle sensor position
Guess that is a start.

I hate that code 24... always had it come up every now and again no matter what i do. I replaced the Air Bypass Controller with another second hand one... code stayed but the weird symptoms behaved differenetly.

Will be interesting to see how my next engine goes.

Could be water temp sensor, or AFM, symtoms seem to fit ;)

I would buy a new WTS and see if that fixes it... then move on to clean AFM or swap it out with another car/spare.

this is gonna take ages but it might help,

these are the trouble codes item and diagnosis from a 1993 impreza manual as far as i know and have tested they are still current and accurate as they can be translated to correspond with a 2002 outback and give true readings.
