Ticking sound and shuddering, can't be good

Hi there
yes I'm a female and I really don't know much about cars but I don't like the sounds I'm hearing in my 96 liberty. Whenever the cars going, I get that annoying ticking sound that sounds like a bomb's about to go off and then when ever I do a sharp turn to the right my steering column shudders or something and makes a really loud low noise.
Does anyone have any ideas about what this might be? I could take it to the mechanic but I've found that generally it costs me a few hundred bucks and they never actually fix the problem.

you could try an oil change for the ticking issue..
as for the noise you hear when turning, it could be a wheel bearing or a cv..

It seems nearly impossible to find a mechanic people trust these days but ask around the best ones are the ones that seem pedantic (anal) and shamefully not the young ones But A subaru specialist is Ideal but perhaps not subaru themselves!
The engine noise is common in all subarus more so the older ones though and often can be fixed by changing the oil grade to the recommended one, Or if your engine has done lots of hours (generally reflected when the car has done over 250-300 thousand K's) sometimes the oil pump gets excessively worn. But i also have found it to be an exhaust problem in the past (Highly unlikely) And the steering noise sounds to me like a worn steering rack!
How many K's has the car done and do you know the history of it!

What would be the recommended grade oil? it's done 290k and I don't really know the history of it pre 240k :???:
A worn steering rack? What exactly does the mean if I wanna fix it?
oh and thanks Porty, low cut tops seem to get me out of speeding tickets but not so much mechanics, thanks for the suggestion though :)
