Steering Stiff??

Steering Stiff??
Me and my mate went for a rally sesh at Peron Dunes (East Coast Tas) a while back in our 89, and 93 L series, just mud, nothing else really, after about 15 minutes of driving.
Once we got back on the road, i noticed my steering went all stiff, REAL stiff, it was fine left and right for 10 - 15 degrees, anything more than that, stiff as all hell, after about another 45 minutes to an hour of driving, it seemed to of come right again, and haven't had the problem since?? But then again, also haven't had a rally sesh like that since either?
What might of the prob been?? Something to do with the CV's as i think they well on there way out?? or could it of been something else
(I have no power steering either)

im not sure about this but if you have split boots on your steering rack, then maybe shit, dirt, sand etc got in there and made it hard to turn.

can't be CVs, because if it was you'll be hearing dreadful cluck noises..
I would jack the car up, put stands under it, then go under and look at steering linkages, rank, uni joints etc and look for something that isn't looking right..

It depends on where/who you buy it from as to how much it will be. If you remove it yourself I would recommend grabbing every clip/clamp/bolt that is associated with the PS setup.saxon.hall.00 wrote:Yeah true, sounds good, so how much am I looking at for all them parts??

If you're relying on a parts yard to get it all for you make sure all the rack brackets and rubbers are there as you will need them, same for the PS pump mount

All the best with it, I love my PS now that I've got it! <- It came from the parts bomb out the back, I paid $90 for it and as of now that L doesn't owe me anything...

Its not hard to do - just need the bits and know how to spin a spanner then torque some bolts... Hardest part is getting an alignment that is good enough to get you to the tyre joint for a proper alignment.
Anyway, you can read up on Sunnie the Brumby's build - its got a lot of pics in the thread so if you're on dial up consider this a warning for a slow upload of the page...
Post 44 has the pics of the powersteering going in, you may get some idea of what's needed here.
The hardest part was physically sliding the rack into place - the plate on the bottom of the engine crossmember is welded in place on the brumby. On the touring wagons, where you usually find the power steering, this plate is bolted to the engine crossmember. You can drill the welds out and replace them with bolts - I decided to pull the rack a part to slide it in then rebuild it once in place. The drilling option would've been easier.
Find an old donor vehicle and it'll be heaps cheaper - you can do so much with the interior of the old brumby from factory parts!

Thanks very much for trying to help out.
I have been able to locate a supplier who will fit and am arranging for the job to be done next Wed.30th.
I've settled on $650 supply and fit and figure that must be OK seeing the Melbourne outfit was $550 to supply and goodnes know how much it would cost to freight it to Sunshine Coast Qld so figure on those prices I must be ahead.
Suppose they could call any amount really as they are a fairly rare commodity. Yeh, no wheel alignment for that price but trust is squred up enough for a 50kl home then I'll get it done.
Seems a lot 2 me..but then I wouldn't know.
To offset this cost I hope to be able to recoup it with the sale of a perfectly good polished al bullbar which I didn't need.
I also have a fibreglass canopy for sale as I don't need that as well.....just a matter of time as to when they sell..but they will.
Two more projects ahead...from drum to disk and then the manufacture of a fibreglass tonneau cover.
