Hi Chaps,
Wondering if I might benefit from some of your expertise..
Have recently purchased 93 L Series Tourer Wagon. Everything is peachy with the car except one problem:
When I am using a higher gear, third or fourth, to control the speed of the vehicle, for example, descending a steep hill or approaching a stop sign or signal a clanking noise is emitted from the rear of the car..??
The same noise occurs when if the car is put into a higher gear when at a speed slightly too fast for that gear ie 80kph and change to fourth.
However as soon as any throttle is applied the noise stops?? It is not continually present??
Any suggestions about what to look at first.
I will add pics of the car soon...
Thanks

Are there vibrations that occur with this noise? If so it could be a universal joint on the tail shaft that's on the way out. Also make sure you're not driving around in 4wd as this will cause un-due strain on the drivetrain, thus wearing out parts early.
The other thing to check is the gearbox mounts, make sure they're actually there (the rubber parts) and in good condition.
Also remember that the subaru L series is front wheel drive when not in 4wd mode. Make sure the noise is coming from the rear - get someone to drive for you while you sit in the backseat and check out the noise.
Cheers
