Could be lots of things.. prob best to go to your local Radiator shop and get them to pressure check your cooling system

yes could be anything from "not really a problem, 10 second 10c fix" to "well f me, need a new motor, how much will that cost?"
at the radiator shop, get them to check for exhaust gas in the coolant - i've been there before

Ok worked out it was my heater core and i micro hole in one hose. where can i get a new aftermarket heater core cheap (with cheap postage to adel) and would i be able to get a silicone hose kit from my local sprints for it?

Ring around a few radiator shops for heater cores. Even try interstate - I seem to recall El_Freddo got his in Vic much cheaper than I saw them here.
Don't bother with silicone hoses -cheap rubber hoses will outlive your car, and I doubt you'd find silicone anyway. Top and bottom rad hoses will be available at any parts shop, heater hose is standard 5/8" cut to length, the one off the back of the water pump you should be able to match up to a hose from some other car at your favourite local parts joint. There are two more between the heater core and the firewall which are genuine Subaru only, and worth doing when you do the heater job.

Take it in to any radiator place and get them to re-core it. Probably get it done the same day and for a lot less than a new one.

Heater cores can't be recored. It's the plastic end tanks that rot and crack.
Or you can just bypass the heater.

The Festiva I did seemed as they had fitted the core and built the rest of the car around it. Had to drop the whole dash to gain access, ended up being a half day job.
Not sure about the L series.
