Timing belts replaced - won't start - Fixed!!!!!!!

All advice welcome, I'm not an expert by any means, learning as I go but need your advice on this one.

1988 L Series Wagon
EA82 Carb (Webber)
5pspd DR.

*Bought car not running, told it had a problem with the Timing belts (passinger side). Car had broken down on the fly, bought then towed to my place.
*New timing belts fitted. Passinger/left side idler pully (toothed) seized - replaced. Inner Centre Cover replaced, old one had a hole in it.
*All put back together, using Gregorys worshop manual.

Engine won't start. There is a spark at the distributer, fuel in the carb (smell), new battery, now needs charge... Engine sounds healthy, wants to start but just can't quite get there.

Please help me. I want to drive my new car :cry:

where ar the timing marks? one should be up and one should be down. set the engine at TDC cyl 1 intake valve open and try it from there. should be close.

Chris_Rogers,

Can't beleive I could be so stupid.... The Timing marks are one up the other down, but on what cyclinder's TDC?????

Is there a way to check which cyclinder its set to. now thats its all together? I do not have a compression gauage.

I feel so silly, though I hope thats all it is, because I can fix it - if thats all whats wrong...

cant remember the layout but I think 1&3 are Pass side. I do it a screw driver and a ratchet. pop the cam cover off and note teh valves. think the inner ones are intake. rotate the to TDC cyl 1 and then rotate the 1&3 cambank to intake one open ( it should put the timing mark up or down) and pop the belt back on check that the other bank is opposite ( mark is up/down in ref to the 1&3 bank.)

from there it should at least cough and splutter and roun rough if its close.

could be, been years since I have worked on a 82 (and I'm about to rebuild one!!) as I said I'm not entirely sure on loaction but timing I am sure on.

1 / 3 are drivers side, 1 being the forward cyl.

No cylinders are at TDC on an EA82 with the timing marks aligned - you match up the middle of the three marks III on the flywheel with the pointer - that puts all cylinders at half-stroke. Then line up the timing marks - put on the LH {inner} belt - tension it; one full clockwise rotation, line up the marks and put on the RH {outer} belt - tension it.

Ok sweet. Thanks for the info, I'll rip it all appart again today. I used the Timing marks and not the three III marks, in fact never even saw them untill you mentioned them.

Will do it all again today amd let you all know! Thanks everyone for your info, its invaluable!

hello again,

I have set the drive/timing belts, this time correctly useing the III marks and not the timing marks. One cam sprocket timing up one down, did the passinger/left side first w one rotation of the crank in between.

Back together and still no start, I'm going to need to charge the battery soon...

How do I set the timing at the dizzy? The books says to just do it and using a timing gun, but hello it won't start... stupid books. So how Do i correctly set it up? I have alligned the rotating thing inside the distributor with the mark on the ouside of the Distributor. But it only allignes onece in every two crank rotations, ie one up one down. However Cyclinder 1 seems to be at the top for both psoitions, using a pencil.... I dont have a compression guage.

Roughly, mine sits in the middle of the slot at about 5 deg and 2/3 at 8 deg. Assuming the ditsy is lined up right that should be good enough until you get a light. I'm no expert just had bad pinging probs so got used to doing it on side of highway

Thanks for the reply. Though I realy know nothing about timing on engines. Can you please explain in thorough detail?

On the flywheels timing marks, there is a A & B. I assume these stand for Advanced and Back or Behind or something similar. There is a zero (0) in the middle then numbers increasing in the A & B directions. On the dizzy ther is just a mark/arrow.

So using these, and others If I didn't mention them, how do I set the timing?

A is After TDC, B Before TDC

Thanks for that Info. I got it going after a while. Was so excited!!!
Have drive it around the block a few times and seems strong, no drove it into the city to work today. No worries at all!

I bet Alex is kicking himself now...I did pm him that it was very probably a simple problem.......
anyway good to see that beasty Lseries back on the road :)
maybe you should watch the fuel consumption now, fixing the timing may have corrected that somewhat too :wink:

I'm glad he didn't listed to you all then. Because I have now been inducted into the Soobi chasis of fun!!!! I can't think of a better person to buy the car, I'm local (To alex), I had to prove myself by fixing it. Ok maybe it wasn't hard but its all new to me and I'm loving it!

I'd love to go to stockton. When is it and what are the details? Who's going? Whats happens etc? Is there a post on here about it?

im glad you're happy with the old girl, Colin!! :lol:

I do miss her dearly... but it was time for a new car for me...

the shaz is only a temporary car, nathan :lol: ;)

maybe, in a couple of years, I'll have another crack at it, but with a brumby perhaps :lol:

Colin - the subaru was definately a learning experience for me. goes to show how some simple and ingenius designs and engineering all go into a small car that has a big heart :lol:

A bit OT I know but Alex are you getting another Subaru (even just as a daily driver sorta thing) soon?
