Coolant leaking in passanger side foot well? L SERIES

Post by indy » Fri May 07, 2010 6:33 pm

Hey guys so i noticed the smell of coolant coming through the car the other day, and two days ago the engine started to get really hot. pulled over and the water level was really low, which was weird because it never uses water, and only 2 weeks ago i topped it up.
Anyway today i noticed that coolant is leaking in the passenger side foot well, it looks like its coming from near the glove box?
Does anyone know what this could be, or have you had a similiar problem?
Cheers thanks all!

Definitely a leak from your heater box mate. Its a dash out job and probably a days work if you've never changed one before.

Alternatively a quick fix is to connect the 2 heater hoses going into your firewall together and bypass the heater core. It is almost winter but so up to you.
L Series current mods:

EJ20G, 3" lift, Roo bar, spotties, EJ Sporty steering rack, desert rats, 27" tyres, 2.5" exhaust

thanks mate, yeh i had a feeling it could be that, because i hear alot of other members talk about it, that sucks lol. are heater cores expensive? or is it usually a leak from one of the hoses?
The only time i ever use the heater is the demister, which is pretty important i guess, otherwise i cant see sh...... is there a guide somewhere on how to do it?
thanks alot for the reply mate, looks like next weekend ive got some work to do lol.

Bad luck Indy... If you plan to keep the car long term it might be worth a new/reco one. Check out this thread for some info. Though a search will no doubt get u much more. Not an easy job but doable. More fiddly than anything but still annoying.

Not desirable but you can always bypass the heater by connecting the two hoses in the engine bay. Maybe a good idea till u get to the job.

Hey all,
I too have experienced the leaking heater core and today I finally decided to do something about it (following the extremely useful dashboard removal advice on these forums).
Anyway that went well but I am having a lot of trouble getting the heater box out. I have removed the two bolts up the top and the bracket on the left for the air con but unfortunatly I seem to have some vents going ito the back passanger area (I have a 1989 touring wagon) which make it impossible to remove. I don't suppose anyone has advice for this?

I'll keep fiddling around, but short of cutting the vents or ripping the carpet up I'm not sure how to proceed...

From memory there are some vents that lead under the driver and pass seats. The heater box itself sits on top of these vents. No actual screws from memory. Check just up from the gear shift boot area, there was some brackets that hold the upper centre console in place there may be some screws in that area that need to be removed. Was some time ago I did mine. But I though one you remove the upper screws the box lifts up off these vents.

I have just realised that I have completely forgotten about the hoses in the engine bay. I guess I need to pull those off, would certainly explain why it felt anchored to something at the back, feeling a bit dumb now :P

Edit: Hmm, didn't seem to make any difference... And I thought it was going to be easy once I had the dashboard out of the way! I reached around to the back of the box and felt some hose clamps, hopefully I wont need to undo those....?
So do I just need to pull it extremely hard out from the firewall? I couldn't see any bolts in the engine bay holding it in.

I appreciate any advice, its very frustrating being so close but not being able to see behind it!

Also, have any of you guys tried driving an L-series without the dashboard? I'd try but don't want to somehow cause damage (not sure how it would be a problem but best to be careful...).
