GT Forester problem #5345

The Forester (2001 GT) is playing up again... different problem this time. Problem is as follows and any input is appreciated other than telling me to sell the car or blaiming it on service history.

Car missfires all the time, seams like one cylinder. Sometimes when u put your foot down it comes good but then can go bad again shortly after.

I first thought coils after unplugging one (the easiest one to get to) during idle and it made no difference to the rough idle. I purchased 4 replacement ones... 2nd hand but working ones.

I installed them today and replaced all spark plugs. Found most of the plugs partially fouled and one very fouled. Car went great for about 5km then went to shit again.

It's as if something is fouling the plugs up which is causing the plugs to miss. Im not sure exactly what could cause this problem. O2 sensor maybe?

Just spent over $300 on parts this time round and got no where... would be cheaper to rent another car at this stage.

Any ideas or suggestions?? Paul?? Save me Jebus!!!!

ive just had a similar problem with a ford telsar i no its not a subi but it turned out it was the afm and i do remember u postin up a wantin to try a different 1
did u manage to sus a different 1 of them out?

Good idea... this did cross my mind. I had resolved my problem with the AFM and the car worked fine for 2 or 3 weeks. This was fixed with a hardcore clean but it was not replaced.

When this was faulting before the problem was fixed as soon as i unplugged the MAF and started the car... this isn't the case this time... but perhaps the MAF is causing over fueling or something which is fouling my plugs.

Obviusly once the plugs are fouled unplugging the MAF sensor wont do a thing. Maybe if i clean the plugs again and try run with the MAF unplugged it might not re-foul the plugs. Might try this tomorrow... it's a huge pain in the ass to remove the plugs in this thing so its no quick an easy test.

Any other info on this Telstar with the same problem?? Was it spitting an engine code or any other indications??

Can get the boss to drive down in the B4 tomorrow and try the AFM from that? may be worth a try.. it does seem strange that it was working so well without the AFM :???:

We would have to pull all the plugs again and clean them just to test the new MAF sensor or to even re-test it running without the MAF sensor.

would it be easier to check for codes first then go from there

Juls.. the problem is it doesn't throw up any codes unless we unplug something (like AFM or IAC) so it's just fault finding with out any help from ECU :(

Well I'm hoping we may have found the issue but I'll have to wait till Dave gets back home to see how it went :)

Hi wondering what ended up happening.I have a 00 impreza doing the same damm thing also dont want to spend bucks on thing i dont need to?Any help would be great.Also have a 00gt Foz great cars hey!Mind you have spent some money there too :)

Was the Mass air flow sensor. Turn car off.. Unplug it... Restart car and test drive. This made my car run great.

Bought $15 can of MAF sensor cleaner from the car shop an gave it a light scrap with a cable tie and it fixed it. Obviously plug it back in.
