The Vortex has gone Wobbley...

Post by coupe » Sun Mar 12, 2006 10:10 pm

Hi Gang
Its a long tale full of Q&A .
The Vortex wobbles when you drive slowly like btween 5 and 10 kms
per hour. Its like a cross between wobbling and lightly snaking side to
side. This only happens at low speed normal speed is fine.At full lock both directions there is no crabbing in the wheels I would have said it was a rouge tyre but i swapped both of the front ones out for a good set as a test.
There was a fair bit of play in the left front inner cv so i removed the whole shaft .As i pulled the unit out, the rear hub bearings came out stuck to the cv...is that normal because i never seen that happen before.
There is a 1mm side ways play in the bearing so i assume that there rooted...When you replace the rear seal does it go in flat side towards the tyre or flat side towards the cv joint.
Can anybody shine any light on this werid tale of wobbley gong Vortex.
Cheers Pete

The wobbling to me sounds like a symptom of wheel bearing wear. The fact that the bearing came out with the shaft and that it has side play would indicate this needs replacing anyway, but I think upon replacing it the above symptom should disappear. I've never seen the bearing come out with the CV.
The seal definitely goes flat edge toward the CV joint.

Have you checked your control arm bearings?

I had wobbles at low speed and snapped around a rh corner. Part of the front control arm bearing went missing. Fine at speed, but low speed, didn't really want to "track" in a straight line 8O - along with like an out of balance wheel.

You have to tell me what a control arm bearing is. All this time working on Subarus and I don't know what they are. :P

Sounds like you've been having fun Pete. :D

Seriously though, I hate it when this kind of stuff happens. At least your Vortex is back to new in the wheeley bits department.

Post by coupe » Thu Mar 16, 2006 11:00 pm

Well the end result was a stuffed rear bearing and bad tyres.
I had new tyres fitted today now the vort is as smooth as.. :D.
So the list was 1 x rear bearing, 1x cv complete, 2x balljoints.
2x front bearing, 4x new 205/ 60 /13.
But hey thats all part of the subie life style
