Head Gasket Replacement

After some info from those in the know about my EJ25 Gen 3 Outback. It turns out I have a busted head gasket on the left side (after a long and painful diagnosis). Its above my mechanical ability to do myself and I can save a heap by only changing the busted one as it can be done in situ without taking the engine out. Does anyone know if the right ones have the same failure rate as the more common left? Is it only a matter of time or could i get away with it? (I know its not idea but weighing up risk vs cost)
On another note, I've read the early Gen3 engines had a thirst for oil that in many cases was fixed under warranty. Does anyone know what actually caused the high consumption?
Thanks heaps to all, I've found this forum unbelievably helpfull...
Cheers
