Hi all,

This is an offshoot of a thread I made over in the chat regarding a power issue I am trying to solve in my 91 Brumby.

I have my suspicions over my ignition coil and whether it is time for replacement. People often say that if it fires it is ok, but as I understand it, it could fire great half the time and then intermittently for some time after that if the coil is on its way out. So I have read the most definitive test is to measure the resistance of the primary and secondary windings and if they lay outside of the manufacturers recommended values, then it should be replaced.

So my coil had 1.4ohms on the primary and 11.8kohms on the secondary. Problem is I have no idea what the recommended values should be as I have no documentation. And these values change depending on the coil, but I think it is usually ~1ohm prim. and 10-11kohm sec.

For those that own one, are these values in the FSM and if so would you kindly note them here?

Failing that, if anyone has a chance, what resistance values do people measure on their coils, assuming you have the same OEM coil. It is a Diamond Electric E-019 12 V coil with no ballast resistor.

Yep I am holding out for someone to have one handy. I wonder what the likelyhood is that its the same coil used on the EA82 and whether that manual would suffice. As that one is online, the EA81 is not in its entirety.

As long as your Brumby has electronic ignition then the EA82 coil will be fine.

Hmm ok I think I read that all Brumbys were electronic after '84. The coil values from the EA82 are 0.84-1.02 prim and 8,000-12,000 sec. It says that is a hitachi though, and mine is a Diamond Electric. It kind of suggests that my coil is probably fine though.

Don't know if this is of any use to you but it is from my manual which does cover both 1600 and 1800 engines.The coil being a Diamond Electric model # E-001-02-R

Thanks Hylton, it is useful to know.

The setup described in your manual appears to be different to my setup, mainly the ballast resistor (and hence the different coils). But still, the values you have posted aren't too dissimilar from my measured values. Maybe I need to start looking elsewhere for my power problem.

I'm yet to see one fail.. unless you've got it hooked up to PJ (Toonga's brumby)

Alright, I am convinced to start looking elsewhere for my troubles.

That said, if anyone who reads this has a 1991 era Brumby Factory Service Manual handy, I would be very curious to know the recommended values, and it will probably help someone out in the future.

830 pages --need usb....Your ignition coil Values according to this SUBARU workshop manual. should be for a 4x4 are..PRIMARY 1.04 - 1.27. SECONDARY 7.360 - 11040.

My Subaru Brumby Manual says that Primary resistance (+ -) should be 1.40 ohms. And the Secondary resistance 11.80 ohms (either + or - to centre of coils core) Using a Multimeter. If you go on to YOUTUBE under "Testing Ignition Coil" there is a couple of good demo's on how to test your coil.

Gazza Those values are for the 1983 subarus with a ballast resistor.

As I stated in your other thread that isn't the Brumby / MV workshop manual it is for the 1600 -1800 series MYs.

The values for the electronic ignition coil are different (NOT BY MUCH BUT ENOUGH) to the points coil with a ballast resistor
