Rising fuel consumption - EA82T

Post by LTurbo » Sat Aug 21, 2010 11:48 pm

Hi Guys

I have noticed over my last couple of tanks I have been starting to use a fair bit more fuel than usuall, I get much less distance out of 1 tank. I pulled out the plugs today for a look and they are white, which I think means they are currently to hot. Also every so often there is a soft 'pop' out of the exhaust when I get of the gas.

I have been mucking around with vacuum lines recently so I am going to check for vacuum leaks first. I am just after ideas on what else I should start checking. Faulty afm?

Cheers

How's your compression? and are you losing any coolant?

What type of fuel are you using? check fuel tank for small pinhole leaks especially if you have been using ethenol blended fuel as I've heard it can be murder on older steel tanks

I have not checked the compression in awhile, but the last time I did it was all good. Its not using any coolant either.

I just use 98oct fuel in it.

Could be the O2 sensor as that would muck up the fuel mixture, would hope it is not though as I only replaced the O2 sensor about a year ago.

Have you still got that spare AFM that I could test with? See if mine is buggered?

No such thing as alpine rated fuel - it there was I'd be stuffed! Alpine Diesel on the other hand - if you don't have it you'll be one of those who spends an hour or two with the RACV guy while they heat your car up to make the regular diesel return to being in an actual diesel state of formation.

I'd probably be looking at the O2 sensor. The one you replaced it with - was it of a reputable brand or an ebay special rip-off?

Cheers

I found 99% of the time that the O2 sensor on the EA82T has just broken the wire off.. still have to replace if it is but you should be able to spot that from the top.

Also is there any work or changes been done to the car recently? like boost controller.. etc..

Not likely to be an AFM issue and Neville now has it in warmer part of the state.

Come on Thomas, some fuel figures not km per tank fill, before and after. Injector cleaner etc?

Not a boost controller but a timer and gauge. A vacuum line had come off inside the unit, that one took awhile to find. Must of pulled out when I was trying to yank the dash out (worst job I have ever had to do on the suby so far). Also found a possible leak in the intake manifold which is now fixed as well. Seems to a fixed the issues, will see how the next tank goes.

Thanks guys

Great to hear.. yes a vacuum line off will not help at all

Let us know how the next few tank fills goes :)

I just found out today that my EA81 in my Brumby was starting to show signs of wanting to die.. I found a bottle of Wynns Engine Treatment to be a bottle of gold after I found after a almost 300km trip down south that I'm still well over half way on my fuel gauge :o

And I'm not a fan of any of these so called life saving additives
