I'm now a little more clear about the engine hesitation with my recently purchased BG5.
I replaced the worn aircon belt, and now realise that the hesitation is caused by momentary seizing of the compressor.
I had previously listened to the compressor (with screwdriver) and there were no obvious noises.
Maybe the compressor is seizing because there is a lack of oil? (but there's probably none here anyway
Anyway, assuming it's a piston seizing, is it a realistic repair in the boondocks, or should I just go for a replacement compressor?:(

Possibly just the clutch, easily replaced if you can find another compressor with a decent one without removing from the car or de-gassing. It's just refrigeration oil so it should be easy enough to find.

Very pleased to say that the problem has been fixed locally. At one stage I phoned Subaru in Manila enquiring if they had a compressor in stock, yes they did, and it was an exchange unit which was priced at the equivalent of AUD 1,400.
But then I eventually found someone locally who kind of agreed with my theory that there was probably no oil in the compressor. and got to work.
Compressor removed, no oil at all inside. Bearing sounded a bit rough, but it was dry. With oil in it sounded/felt more hopeful.
So, compressor replaced (with oil inside), hoses vacuumed, receiver/drier cleaned, condenser washed off. Tested and worked OK.
total cost :- (in AUD)
Oil $6
Re-gas $13.50
Labour $54
$73.50
So I'm a happy chappie,, now I can think about the Outback struts for it.

Thanks for your suggestions/comments.
