Carby stalling under acceleration????

Hi guys,

My cousin here has a VW beach buggy he got a mechanic to install new pistons etc to the block. He knows the basic but not much. Anyway the car does not hold idle when cold at all and about 30secs when hot. It also wants to stall, and feel sluggish under acceleration only when driving.

Its a 1.6 and has a peugeot carby on it.

Anyway i had a look at it and found a vac succking tube on the carby that was open. I'll try to block it and see what happens. good tools and parts are expensive here and there only one Auto shop like repco on the whole island lol.

I think all carbies behave in a similar way so if its not that vac tube what else could it be?

I also saw on the side of the dizzy a circular part that has a vac tube on it. Its blocked with dirt. what does it normally do?

Hope i could get some info to try and get the car to run better. I know its not a suby but a close couzin:)

Thx

Well since no one has said anything i'll put in my two cents worth.

You said that a mechanic with basic knowledge put pistons in? No insult intended but that kinda makes diagnosis difficult because it means most things have been touched and ultimately changed..

Has it been run in properly?
Have you gone over everything and made sure nothing is out of place.

Hard one to solve over the internet!

Good luck with it tho.
Keep us posted mate.

try unblocking the vacuum line on the dizzy and connect it to a vacuum point on the carby near the base but not below the butterfly this will give the engine vacuum advance

Hmm, you let a mechanic who only knows the basics rebuild your engine.

Ill assume you have a 1600 VW with a vacuum only distributor and a Peugeot carburettor?

Obviously your carb is way lean for the engine, what carburettor are we talking about here? Any info on the carb?

You'll never get that combo to work, change out dizzy to mechanical or put the correct carb on. Most change the dizzy.

If you do have a mechanical/vac advance dizzy, has it had a recond/recurve to suit the engine?

To clarify the mechanic that did the work knows he shit:p
Its the owner of the car that doesn't know much.
Yeah i know its hard to fix over the net but just wanted to see if i could get more ideas to try and see

I'll try to get more info on the dizzy and carby. What carby would be good to replace with?

Also i'll try to clean it and connet it like you said TOONGA.

I'll keep you updated.
thx guys

that vacuum leak and any other will often cause a bad idle but not enough to kill running engine. New pistons normally with new rings would usually up the compression with their presumably better seal and increase suck value too. That cannister on dizzy is vacuum advance so when vacuum is up the dizzy gives the timing a bit of advance. Many cars this age are shot and run unknowlingly malfunction - not likely to be your problem. Maybe crud in carby so try carby cleaner paint thinners is flammable as well but have been used as a substitute in the past for the carb.

ditch the carby mate and get a vw one. i messed around with my hotted up 1600 for nearly 2 years and it never ran right, ditched the lot for a subaru motor lol.

my buggy did this, carby needs tuning and the dizzy needs its vacume for advance. i cant recall the carby model and dizzy model off the top of my knokker but ill see if i can find the crap i had on paper
