Lost of clutch while stopping at the lights. The clutch will stay at the top until nudged then will drop to the bottom. RAC thinks the clutch or diaphragm collapsed. RAC towed it back to my house. After a few days of being parked out in the front verge, I started car and the clutch is working again. A similar issue happened a few years ago but with the brake. I Started the car and there was no brake. Switched off the car and started it again and it was okay. Any thought?

It sounds like a slave or master cylinder leaking... The kits are usually pretty cheap and are realatively easy to do yourself. Only like 8, 10, 12, 14mm spanners, the rebuild kit, brake fluid, and bleed kit (buy a one man brake bleed kit from, repco, super cheap auto, etc)

I'd like a better description of the pedal action.

Does the pedal come back to the top by itself or do you have lift it back up?

Have you checked the clutch fluid level?

Could be a bypassing master cylinder or leaking slave cylinder.

The pedal did not come back up to the top by it self. I had to lift it back up.

The fluid level is okay. No sign of leak on the master and slave cylinder. everything looks dry. It is however due now for fluid replacement as per the maintenance schedule.

I'd bet it's your master cylinder.

Late model hydraulics are good at internal bypassing and not losing fluid.

Pressure plates don't go faulty and then come good.

+1 Call Perth Brake Parts and see if they have an exchange unit on the shelf. Personally I'd replace the slave cylinder as well. While you're there ask them for some new fluid too

Agree with intermittent bypass. Had the same with a Vl Commondoor with the nissan mechnicals. Try to demonstrate and it works perfectly! Very frustrating.

Thanks everyone. It was the master cylinder pistons. Only Subaru had the repair kit. It was shipped from Sydney. I was going to replaced the boot and reservoir seal as well but there were no stocks in Australia.
