Is the gearbox/ drive shaft similar for a fuel injected 89 L series the same as for a 1990 standard carbie L series.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The only difference in the gearbox for the MPFI is the output stub spline count for the front diff. The MPFI and MPFI turbo gearboxes have a 25 spline count where as the carb'd gearboxes have a 23 spline count.
If you're going to get an MPFI gearbox you'll need the inner cups from the drive shaft of that gearbox - if its NA MPFI you can get away with swapping just the cup on the driveshaft.
This is the only difference between the gearboxes that stops you from a plug and play. The turbo gearboxes have the crap low range and a different set of gear ratios too.

thanks for that. Excuse my ignorance on this one. Why cant I just change the clutch plate and get a plate with the right number of grooves 25 for the different number of splines

El Freddo is not talking about anything to do with the clutch.
This is in regards to the spline count on the stub axels that stick out the left and right front sides of the gearbox, which the front driveshafts connect to.

Thanks for that. I did say excuse my ignorance. I have always had the carbie L series. In fact I have 4 of them!!
So this means the cv's are different between the two models. The question I am really asking is can you stick a gearbox from a fuel injected 89 model into a carbie 90 model? If so what do I need to know?

ONLY in the inner CV cup spline count - everything is the same. Don't go with the turbo CV shaft unless you have the whole unit - the ball and cage setup on the inner CV are larger.
5000 count now
