Floppy gear stick, and over heating (L series)?

Hi all just bought my first ever scooby.

its a l series wagon.
just a few things, the gear stick is very floppy, id imagine this is most probly the detent springs.....any one changed them before and if so how hard was it?

also it heated up on the drive home very fast 5-10mins, is it common for the thermostats to get stuck? or could this be another problem?

im a mechanic by trade, would just like to know more about the common problems with this car.

The bushes set for gear shift levers are still available about $20, a black rubber and white nylon fit together, per end of the shift rod, then the yoke closest to box about $5 each need two of the green ones, and belt expander pin out to acces the bolt whose head is closest to ext housing rear seal cover ting ting thing

Thermostats do stick to overheat real quick. Bought my L wags same reason and fitted used one in minutes to fix problem

^ As Steptoe has said about the gear lever bushes and the thermostat.

Also have the radiator condition checked - a radiator that has channels blocked will not cool the engine down efficiently - I've heard of radiators holding up until they're 50% blocked. Your local radiator shop should be able to "rod" the channels of your radiator for somewhere near $100.00 - if this is not possible you'll know that a new radiator is on the cards before its a new engine or engine rebuild...

hey guys, replaced thermostat today, runs awesomly cool now.

where do i get these bushes? subaru dealer?
and is the floppy gear stick quite common?

Subie dealer, aprt number for front most set green ones that clap out 633011330 need 2 of these

A pic, shows the green ones on their packet - these may not be easy to replace with box in car, the ones above, easier, can see how white nylon fits into the black bush - misplaced pat number for these two. The rod uses four of each in total plus the two green ones most forward

There a few things sweeter than the feeling of brand new bushes, or bearings, in steering columns, sway bars and linkages and the like..

Usually such an easy fix you wonder why you left it so long. I remember on my Brumby putting up gear stick slop for years, until someone told the bush to fix it was the size of a 5 cent piece and cost about as much!
