L series - stalling at idle

Post by indy » Fri Jun 03, 2011 8:36 pm

Hey guys, so i was driving tonight all well and good until i slow down to turn into a street and my dashlights come on. the engine stalled. couldnt start it back up, waited about 5 mins and it eventually kicked over. was running really rough and seemed like it was missing, and would stall when i let the engine run back to idle. had to keep revvin it, and when coming to a stop chuck it in neutral and rev it otherwise it would just stall.

The Distributor lead? on the dizzy has been corroded, been like that for a bit, but the other day i pulled it off and it just sorta crumbled. so im guessing thats my likely suspect. would that give this problem where the engine will stall only at idle?
when im driving it you dont notice a thing, only when i slowup. nothing when i take off, just idle.
Other suggestions?

It just happened out of the blue, so got me stumped. and to be honest im pretty basic with cars. any help would be great thanks fellas!

Check your fusible links. These die a slow painful death most of the time. You can find these in the brown box that's mounted on the side of the coolant bottle near the battery.

If one is corroded, burn, charred or broken replace it.

The other issue could be that the primary jet is blocked - have you run it very low on fuel recently? Could be worth putting a new carby kit through the carby when you pull it down and clean it out with compressed air.

Also check that the fuel return line is not blocked ;)

Hopefully someone can back this up or come up with a better idea... :D

Cheers

thanks freddo ill checkout the fusable lines and petrol lines, havent run it really low on petty for awhile.

After a bit of driving ive found that the car starts and idles fine when i first start it up (when its cold), once i get it warmed up and driving around for a bit everything is good, until i slow down and the car is in neutral (i.e ive got the clutch in to change down gears or stopped and my foot is on clutch and brake) the car just stalls, the idling just goes to poo once its warmed up.

Dizzy cap and coil lead both have been replaced,

i was also suggested that the EGR valve could be playing up and that can make similar things like this happen? has anyone had an experience with this?
