trying to split an ea gearbox dual range 95% of the way there but there's something i'm missing.. it will split but not completely, i remember reading something about lug pins or something in the back tha hold it together and are quite inconspicious.?

Have you removed all the little balls and springs from the rear end engaging device? Then after you've done that there's a little 10mm bolt on the selector shaft that you need to remove so that arm can move freely. This is all done through the access plate on the top of the gearbox near the rear output shaft:



^ Lots of little balls and springs you'll have to take note of if you plan to put this gearbox back together

Getting the rear housing off gets you to this point:



Then it's time to crack the front halves. I've not had anything hold this back other than the output stubs and the low range lever if you haven't removed the arm on the lever, there will be a pin holding it on there - knock this out and it will just leave a circular shaft behind.

Once you've done that you'll end up with this:



^ The only thing that could be holding you back are the dowels. There are two or three. In the above pic there's one on the bottom left, on the front of the gearbox beside the diff/below the input shaft and one up the top on the bell housing.

A rubber or plastic hammer is a great tool to go ken bruce on it to split once all the bolts have been removed.
