Tailgate Gas Struts - L series

Hello,

Awhile ago I had dramas finding someone to fit gas struts locally to the back of my L series wagon. I ended up using a local distributor for 'Struts Australia'. They mounted the brackets on th bottom up the wrong way and the brackets have now flexed quite a bit after a couple of months. I took it back and they turned the brackets back the right way (I could have F%$#%$ done that!) but now the struts are a bit short and they refused to change them to the longer ones.

Does anyone have 'Struts Australia' struts fitted? Mine are 720 8-18 -350nm. These are too short. If you have a set could you let me know the right length so I can just order them off the net or another place as the local place can go and get F#$%e. If your in Ballarat and want to know where not to go I can let you know.

Is yours a standard wagon or high top touring wagon - informed they use longer strut. I'd call in on fair trading for the dispute

I've got some std sports wagon ones for sale. they are used but look new and held the tailgate firm:) They don't suit the higher roof wagons.

I wouldn't buy new - just have my current ones re-gassed. Easier and cheaper.

But so far I've been lucky in that I found a set at the wreckers that will knock you out if you're not careful :D

Yep.. Touring wagons and Sports wagons use different size rear tailgate struts and if you some good condition (not rusted) old ones I'd recommend you regass them. This is also an advange if you have added extra weight to your talgate.. i.e. speakers, etc.. I would also recommend you don't have a good friend come around and show you how with 1 simple move, they can make them stay up :twisted: You don't want to know !!

BTW.. if anyone finds a spare set of Touring wagon ones at the wreckers or in someones no longer use collection.. please PM me :mrgreen:

Thanks for the responses guys.

I just have the regular L wagon not the high roof model.

Unfortunately this hasn't been resolved. I have had six trips to the workshop and several phone calls. we are at the not returning my calls stage and not in when I show up to the garage....... I have worked around retail mangement for years and find this guys behaviour appaling.

I tried to get them regassed initially but there was nowhere in Ballarat to get them done.

I can't believe a $100 15min fitment part has wasted so much of my time!

I emailed this guy some questions and he was helpful - his price also seems good. So i might order these next week.

For anyone who may need this in the future.

From what I have found out standard L series wagon struts should be 775mm centre to centre.

Thanks for this info benfaira. I would still love some used ones as I'd like to get the regassed to a higher rating but I'll keep these in mind as he does mention they are available for the high roof :)

my trick....

in one foul crack, give them a quick jolt to bend them out a smidge.

youd be suprised how well it works.

or fit a pice of polypipe a smidge bigger than the strut around it, then when you lift up the bootlid you just slide the pice of pvc up the strut and itll hold up the tailgate.

i use to use a fishing gaff (a massive hook on a stick) to hold mine up, until one day dad was hanging off the door and couldnt figure out why it wasnt shutting...needless to say he bent my tailgate hahaha.

So this is were Jules got the idea to kill my struts... I now blame you Alex :twisted:

I love the idea of using the smaller piece of tube but next time you're at the workshop, I'll show you how good my "modified" struts work.

haha mine lasted well until i stumbled over a reconditioned set.

they would almost know you out on the way up haha.

i remember when i was looking for new ones they were like 80bux each or sumthing. Effff that!

Sportswagons ones are everywhere but high roof are like hens teeth :(

btw.. I've never seen any struts that "almost know you" but you did have a "Wanky Wagon" :mrgreen:
